Christ Church Anglican Church is throwing open its doors on Saturday 17 May for all the community to experience this unique building, its history and use.
The first Christ Church was opened in 1876, while the current Christ Church is approaching 100 years of serving the Bundaberg community, with its construction completed and dedication taking place in 1927.
Next to Buss Park and in the heart of the CBD, Christ Church not only provides a central home for worship in Bundaberg, it is also home of a number of ministries that support those in need.
‘Cathedral like’ with its beautiful stained glass windows, pipe organ, sanctuary, chapels, bells and acoustic qualities, Christ Church is a place of wonder and reflection.
The day’s activities for kids include origami, clay modelling and drawing.
Children will have the chance to try on church robes and our talented musicians will be giving recitals.
Guided tours of the church are available or a self-guided tour leaflet is also an option.
Of note, is information gathered about the 235 Christ Church men who enlisted in the AIF in World War I, of whom 42 did not return.
They are memorialised in the honour roll in the church.
Local historian Margaret Cooper-Smith will be in attendance to answer questions about these men.
Also, our bells will be ringing out, with a video stream of the bells in use available to be seen at the event.
The peal of bells was installed in 2018 on the 100th anniversary of the Armistice in World War I, they are called the ‘Peace Bells’.
At 12 pm a short ecumenical service of prayer and music will take place for those interested.
All the Bundaberg Anglican churches will be represented – from Bargara, Burnett Heads and Bundaberg West.
Tea, coffee and scones will provide refreshment during the day.
The day and all activities are free and we will be open from 9 am to 2 pm.
