Local mum Millee Barr is holding a fundraiser this Saturday for Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month, a cause close to her heart due to her son’s condition.

Can you tell us about the purpose of this fundraiser and what specific needs it aims to address in the community?

This fundraiser supports the Children’s Tumour Foundation for NF (Neurofibromatosis) Awareness Month.

NF is a genetic disorder that causes tumours to grow on nerves throughout the body.

It’s a condition close to my heart—my seven-year-old son was born with NF, and I’ve seen first-hand the challenges families face.

The goal is to raise awareness, provide support for families, and fund critical research and services through CTF.

What event is planned as part of the fundraiser, and how can community members participate?

Community members can pop into The Floral Chapter anytime this week to make a donation, but our main fundraising day is Saturday 17 May.

On the day, we’ll have:

  • Awareness ribbons for sale for $5
  • Handmade blue & green keyrings for $20
  • A treat table with lolly boxes for a gold coin donation
  • An eye-catching balloon garland display to draw people into the arcade

It’s a fun and meaningful way to show support for those living with NF.

How will the funds raised be utilised, and what impact do you hope to achieve?

100% of the funds raised will go directly to the Children’s Tumour Foundation.

They provide vital support services to families, fund medical research, and help raise awareness nationally.

We hope to not only contribute financially but also educate the Bundaberg community about this rare condition.

Who are the key partners involved in this fundraiser, and how are they contributing?

We’re so grateful to have local businesses supporting us:

  • The Treat Table is providing a green and blue lolly bar, with all proceeds donated
  • March Events is creating a stunning balloon garland to bring colour and attention to the arcade

Their generosity helps make the day special and draws in more people to the cause.

Can you share any success stories from past fundraisers that highlight the difference this initiative has made?

Over the past couple of years of fundraising  & sharing our story, we have already raised close to $6,000 which went directly to supporting families affected by NF.

More importantly, it sparked conversations—many locals had never heard of NF before and left with a greater understanding.

That awareness means everything to families like mine.

How can individuals or businesses contribute if they are unable to attend the event?

Anyone can pop into the shop before or after the 17th to donate or purchase a ribbon or keyring.

Alternatively, they can donate through the below link and help us try reach our goal of $10,000. https://www.ctf.org.au/my-fundraising/1031/wilson-the-nf-hero-2025

What message would you like to share with the community about the importance of supporting this cause?

NF may be rare, but for families living with it, the effects are very real and lifelong.

Raising awareness not only brings understanding but also drives funding for research, support services, and—one day—a cure.

Every small act of kindness helps shine a light on this condition and brings hope to those affected.

Anything else?

I’d just love to thank the Bundaberg community for always showing up and supporting local causes like this.

If you’re in the area, please come by—bring a friend, grab a ribbon or a treat, and help us turn Bundy blue and green for NF!
