The team at Lady Musgrave Experience welcomed an unexpected but very special visitor this week in their first humpback whale sighting of the 2025 migration season.
Guests and crew aboard a Lady Musgrave Experience tour were thrilled as a lone humpback broke the surface in the Southern Great Barrier Reef, just off shore from Bundaberg, marking a very welcome early sighting.
The majestic creature will soon be followed by around 40,000 others that typically begin migrating north in June.
“This early sighting is a magical reminder of how closely connected we are to nature out here,” said Brett Lakey, Director of Lady Musgrave Experience.
“Seeing a humpback whale this early is a beautiful surprise.
It’s like nature’s way of saying, ‘Winter is on the way, and the whales are too.’”
Each year, humpback whales migrate from the icy feeding grounds of Antarctica to the warmer waters of Queensland to breed and give birth, where the tropical waters remain mild and welcoming for these gentle giants and their newborn calves.

While it’s not unusual for a few early arrivals, this sighting reaffirms Lady Musgrave Experience’s unique position on the migratory path and the exceptional encounters it offers.
Lady Musgrave Experience invites guests to witness this spectacle up close and celebrate the start of another amazing whale season on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, with options for Half Day Whale Watching Tours, Reef and Whale Two Day Super Saver combo packages, and Whale Season Passes now available for travel between July – October.
