The Gin Gin Craft ‘n Chat group has thrown its support behind Sunflower Skyes, donating individually crocheted sunflowers to be sold for fundraising.
The small business was developed by the family of Skye, a young girl born in Bundaberg who was diagnosed with a rare chromosome duplication, to support her in her cancer treatment.
Bundaberg Regional Council Community Resilience and Connection portfolio spokesperson Councillor Tracey McPhee said the donation was a heartwarming reminder of the importance of community support.
“The Craft ‘n Chat group meet weekly at the Gin Gin Community Hub and decided to use their time and talent to support this worthy cause,” Cr McPhee said.
“The project was led by the group’s youngest member Stania, who adapted the pattern for others to follow and then created a prototype to guide the rest of the group.
“The result was a collection of beautiful, crocheted sunflowers that are being sold to raise funds for Sunflower Skyes and shows how important our neighbourhood centres are as places for the community to gather and support each other.”
Stania said she was proud of the contribution made by the Craft ‘n Chat group.
“I am so grateful to be part of this amazing community,” Stania said.
“We all came together to support Skye’s battle with cancer and to help them ‘spread happiness through sunflowers’.
“I am so proud of everyone’s hard work and contribution.
“They did an amazing job.”
Skye’s brother Tyler said the donation was much appreciated by the family who sell the items through their website and at markets where they now live on the Gold Coast to be closer to Skye’s medical services.
