Given the reputation of its famous seafood pies it’s no surprise Traveller’s Rest at Gin Gin has entered the running for Countrywide Café of the Year.
The popular café joins a host of local businesses vying for top spot in the national competition which is based on customer votes.
Divisional councillor Wayne Honor is a big fan of the cafe's signature sea scallop pies and hopes they get the national recognition they deserve.
“Gin Gin is renowned for its pies and I'm a big fan. The sea scallop pies are fresh and full of flavour,” he said.
“I hope everyone supports Traveller's Rest. It's a wonderful cafe and the staff are always happy and friendly.”
Two Bundaberg cafés are already among the first in Australia to surpass 100 votes with Alowishus Delicious and Oodies Café topping the list so far.
By voting in the Countrywide Food Service Distributors competition, customers go in the draw to win one of 25 $500 Visa gift cards. The café with the most votes wins $25,000 and the café with the most votes in each of the five regions wins $5000 each.
Traveller’s Rest owner Jenny Gourley said there was no mistaking their most popular item.
“Definitely the pies,” Ms Gourley said.
“We have people traveling from all over Australia and even internationally and they say ‘we’ve heard about the pies’.”
Ms Gourley encouraged people to participate in the campaign.
“Why not, if some of our customers can win a few prizes along the way.”
