Radio control car drivers converged on Bundaberg for the 2019 RCRA Queensland Quarterscale Radio Control Speedway Titles on the weekend.
The state titles had more than 60 cars competing at the Coral Coast 1/4 Speedway Track with racers from Brisbane, Maryborough, Bundaberg and surrounding regions.
Coral Coast Radio Controlled Car Club member Bob Hebert, his wife, Margaret and son Kevin are keen particpants.
Bob and Kevin said their cars move up to 80kmh around the Bundaberg track.
“I used to race real speedway myself and started off back in the sixties and still have my FX Holden back at home,” Bob said.
Bob said the competition was just like the real speedway and the same rules applied to the competitors with full-size cars.
“All the rules are the same and whether the driver is sitting behind the wheel or looking down with a remote in their hand,” Bob said.
“If a car takes a turn, all the cars have to stop, just the same as the full-size speedway.”
Margaret said Bob liked to use the big track and that was one of the reasons why they made the monthly commute to Bundaberg for radio-controlled cars.
“We don’t have a dirt track down at Logan, it’s more electric cars because of noise etc, we really like this place and it’s worth the trip,” Margaret said.
Kevin qualified for the final round and said radio-controlled car racing was a great sport for all ages and he would definitely recommend it to anyone with an interest in racing.
Five classes battle it out
The 2019 RCRA Queensland Quarterscale Radio Control Speedway Titles had five classes: sprint car, dirt modified, late models and AMCA.
Scott Craig from Scotty’s RC Repairs and Parts sponsored the event and said it was a big turn-out.
“I drive a late model which has the biggest engines in them,” Scott said.
“I raced and qualified third for the final – the track is a little bit greasy or slippery at the moment – so it’s a real driver’s track.
“This track is one of the biggest in Australia, most of them are about 110 on the pole, this is about 140 on the pole line.
“Gearing of the car can be very critical when racing here, you get a lot more speed than you do on most tracks.”
Scott said after the state titles the Australian titles would be held in Melbourne.

Growing sport in the Bundaberg Region
Scott has been racing radio-controlled cars for a quarter of a century and said it was a great sport that was continuing to expand in the Bundaberg Region.
“It seems to be growing all the time, we have picked up four new members this week,” Scott said.
“We are always after new members and everyone is welcome.”
