The storm season is almost here and to help residents prepare, Bundaberg Region organisations are teaming up for the Get Ready workshop.

Presented by the Bundaberg and District Neighbourhood Centre, the seminar will feature guest speakers from the Red Cross, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Bundaberg Regional Council.

Centre manager Corrie McColl said when it came to storm season, most people did not see the importance of securing records and documentation until it was too late.

“One of the most stressful situations that people can face is the loss of their records such as passports, photos, birth certificates and insurance policy information,” Corrie said.

“Equally important is the records of emergency contacts and relatives who need to be contacted should the worst happen.

“Imagine the feeling of security knowing that all the vital contacts and information are secured in one spot safe from disaster.”

That is just some of the vital information that the Get Ready workshop would discuss with participants, according to Corrie, and it was all known knowledge from past experiences.

“During the floods of 2011 and then 2013, many residents reportedly, lost their documents through water damage or flood waters washing them away,” he said.

“While being rescued, residents did not have time to collect their important records and other possessions.”

With new technology now available, Corrie said it was an opportunity and easy for residents to keep information safe.

“It’s a bit like doing a will,” he said.

“Once you have the information in a secure place it just needs updating occasionally.”

Corrie said it was equally important for residents to know where to look for the latest information during a weather event and how to monitor when and where it is safe.

“Emergency Services will cover the four steps to being prepared including having an emergency plan, emergency kit, preparing your home and tuning into warnings and information,” he said.

“The Red Cross will provide information about their “Get Prepared” app which allows for cloud based emergency information to be stored safely.

“Bundaberg Regional Council will demonstrate the live natural disaster dashboard located on its website.”

The Get Ready workshop will be held at the Bundaberg Neighbourhood Centre, 111 Targo Street, on 15 October from 9.30am.
