Pet owners are being urged to take advantage of significant discounts by desexing and registering their pets as part of the RSPCA's annual Operation Wanted campaign.

Operation Wanted is a joint initiative between Bundaberg Regional Council, local participating veterinary clinics and the RSPCA.

Participating veterinary clinics offer a 20 per cent discount off their usual desexing fee to people who have registered online and received a unique desexing discount code.

Council is supporting the campaign by offering one year’s free registration for dogs, whether a new or existing registration, which are desexed at any of the campaign’s participating vets from 1 June until 31 August.

To be eligible, dog owners simply provide evidence that their dog was desexed through one of the participating vets.

Council’s Health, Compliance and Enforcement spokesperson Cr May Mitchell said animal management was a high priority for Council.

“We encourage all pet owners to desex, microchip and register their pets through the Operation Wanted campaign,” she said.

Cr Mitchell said it was the law to register and microchip your pet and there were many benefits.

“Dog registrations are designed to promote responsible dog ownership and also provide safety and security to your dog, you and the community,” she said.

“Registering your dog makes it easier for lost dogs to be reunited with their owners.

“Desexing provides a happier and healthier life for your animal by reducing the number of unwanted litters, reducing aggressive behaviour and wandering and reducing the risk of some cancers.

“If your dog is already desexed, Council offers ongoing reduced registration fees.”

To renew an existing dog registration online visit the website.

To register a new dog, call into a Council Service Centre or phone 1300 883 699 for a registration form to be emailed to you.
