Roller skating attracts all ages at Bargara

The popularity of skating at Bargara has grown, with more community members strapping on a pair of skates and hitting the pavement.

Skating at Bargara was initiated by a group of friends who wanted to spend more time exercising while socialising by the beautiful seaside.

As one of the initiators Marc Obrowski said, the response from the community had been overwhelmingly positive as he welcomed first time participants to the Nielson Park arena.

Marc said skaters as young as five right up to people in their 50s had enjoyed the winter’s afternoon in the sunshine, taking in the relaxed yet upbeat atmosphere.

“We kick off at 3pm and people can turn up at any time,” he said.

“We normally see between 15 and 20 people turn up, but it looks like a lot more this week.

“More and more people are going back to the old-style skates, which is just great to see also.”

Marc said as well as skaters, community members had taken the opportunity to pop down to see one another, as social exercise.

“You will see quite a few people sitting here and socialising, some just come for the chat,” he said.

“What happens sometimes is people will walk past, see it and go home and grab their skates and be back half an hour later and do some skating.

“While others, who may have had skates for some time – they may have got them for Christmas or whatever, and they think now because of this, it is the time to finally unpack the skates and do some skating!”

Rum City Derby Dolls also enjoy Skating at Bargara, as teammates have been using the weekly skating event and to the rink to train following the temporary COVID-19 closure of roller derby.
