Tennis Bundaberg has recently upgraded its facilities and is encouraging more residents to join in on their 2020 season

After spending over a quarter of a million dollars upgrading its West Bundaberg Drinan Park facility Tennis Bundaberg is encouraging residents to “have a look and bring a racket”!

Tennis Bundaberg president Geoff Strube said the club had embraced the “new normal” for sport and provides a fun, safe game for people to play night or day.

The new doubles competition starts mid-September and Geoff said new members were always welcome.

“All club members are offered free coaching on a Tuesday night to brush up their skills,” Geoff said.

“This service is an excellent entry point to tennis in Bundaberg if you are coming back to the game.”

He said beginner players needn’t be concerned as the doubles competition on a Wednesday from 7pm was graded to accommodate those new to the game.

More experienced players “who want to hit the ball hard and run hard” are encouraged to join Tennis Bundaberg for its Tuesday night games from 7pm.

“Come and have a look and bring your racket,” Geoff said.

He said the club was thriving.

“We have an active membership of 65 players.

“Add into that number our seniors comp and additional tennis social groups who use our facility and player numbers expand out to well over 100.”

There are also exciting developments coming in 2021 with the appointment of a young Tennis Australia coach to kick off junior coaching.

“He’s keen to initiate Hot Shot Tennis, a game especially designed for kids, 10 and under, to learn the skills of tennis,” Geoff said.

“The Hot Shot courts and rackets are smaller, the balls don’t bounce as high so they are easier to hit and young players love it.

“His other initiative will be Cardio Tennis a modified game that combines tennis drills with a workout program to a high energy sound track.

“The program is fun, and helps participants lead an active lifestyle.

“Keep an eye on Facebook for times and dates.”

Tennis Bundaberg’s new Wednesday night season will commence on 23 September. To nominate contact Tomas O’Malley on 0405 105 767. Closing date for entries will be 18 September.

A grading night will be held on 16 September for any new players who would like to join.
