Bargara sprint triathlon turns on family friendly charm

Australia Day Aquathon Bargara
Australia Day Aquathon sprint winner Ben Rudd is likely to feature among the frontrunners at the Bargara Sprint Triathlon at Kellys Beach on Sunday.

Competitors of all ages and abilities will line up for the annual Bargara Sprint Triathlon at Kellys Beach on Sunday.

A field of 50 competitors aged from three to 60 years old will line up for the event which, although smaller than usual, will be big on spirit according to club president Troy Austin.

“We normally have about 100 competitors but there are a lot of big triathlon events in other centres this weekend, so we’re down on numbers,” Troy said.

“But we’ll still have a couple of hours of fun, it’s a family-friendly event.”

Troy said the smaller field also made it an ideal event for anyone interested in trying out triathlons to compete in the Give it a Try category.

“It’s a nice event, we’ve held it at Kellys Beach for the past seven years,” he said.

“We have the surf lifesavers providing water safety services for a nice ocean swim at Kellys and the bike and run legs wrap around the headland.”

Troy said he expected the club’s talented junior base would shine on Sunday in the absence of some of the stronger senior competitors at other events and was thankful that ‘sister’ clubs Agnes Water and Hervey Bay were sending contingents to support the event.

The Bargara Sprint Triathlon will require the closure of Woongarra Scenic Drive from the roundabout at The Causeway, including other access roads, between 6am and 10am.

Motorists in the area are asked to be mindful of the greater number of cyclists in the area on Sunday.

Registrations for competitors are open until midnight tomorrow night and can be lodged here.
