Eagles claw their way to women’s AFL win

Waves AFL
Olivia Schneider gets a kick away for Across The Waves Eagles in an AFL Wide Bay Takalvan’s Women’s Premiership showdown with Hervey Bay Bombers.

Across The Waves Eagles had to dig deep to tough out a three-points AFL Wide Bay Takalvan’s Women’s Premiership victory over hosts Hervey Bay Bombers in difficult conditions on Saturday.

The Eagles took a major step towards the minor premiership by maintaining their perfect record after six rounds with their 3.0 (18) to 1.9 (15) top of the table victory.

The Bombers had been shut out by Waves 4.2 (26) to 0.3 (3) in the season opener back on February 13.

They had more shots at goal this time, but their nine behinds cost them a win.

The Eagles kicked the only goal of the first quarter and added a further two in the third term, but they were held scoreless from then, doing enough hang on with Kayla Osborn, Kasey Stone, Olivia Wightman, Marie Smith, Rachael Maher, and goal kicker Sarah Pizzey their best.

With four rounds remaining, the Eagles moved to 24 points, eight points clear of the Bombers, who now share second position with Bay Power who had to also pull out all stops to defeat an improving Gympie Cats 5.5 (35) to 4.6 (30).

Diggers Doon Villa
Diggers’ Travis Price is marked by Doon Villa’s Ben Sheppard as he traps the ball in their Wide Bay Premier League Men’s duel at Martens Oval on Saturday.

Alex Hailes bagged a double as Brothers-Aston Villa emerged as the only Bundaberg team with two wins after the second round of the Wide Bay Premier League Men’s competition with a 4-0 victory over SC Corinthians at Martens Oval on Saturday night.

Fellow first-round winners Across The Waves had the bye, but Fraser Flames and Maryborough’s Donna Villa both also recorded their second victories, against Sunbury Blues 2-0 and a very competitive Diggers 2-1 respectively.

United Park Eagles (UPE) bounced back from their first-up loss to Granville to strike form and down first-round bye team Bingara 3-0.

In the Women’s Premier League, Sunbury and KSS Jets both posted their second wins, while Bundaberg heavyweights UPE, who were coming off a bye, and Bingera, battled out a 2-2 draw.

Mark Quaite
Matthew Quaite goes on the attack for Waves Cities in his four-goal haul in their Division 1 men’s trial clash with All Blacks at Hinkler Park on Saturday.

Waves Cities’ division 1 men and women both enjoyed wins over archrivals All Blacks 6-3 and 4-1 respectively in the second and final round of Bundaberg Hockey trial games at Hinkler Park on Saturday.

Matthew Quaite hammered in four goals for Cities, a feat matched by Colby Zahn for Raiders/Rovers in their 11-3 romp against Arrows/Athletics.
