Charity pig racing raising funds for Gin Gin firies

Toni Zimitat and Wendi Guy are excited for the pig racing for the Gin Gin Rural Fire Brigade.

A charity pig racing event will be raising funds for the Gin Gin Rural Fire Brigade when it kicks off at the Gin Gin Hotel on Sunday.

Member Wendi Guy said the brigade, which was made up of all volunteers, was hoping to raise $7000 to go towards the running of the not-for-profit organisation.

“We have 19 members in the brigade, most are firefighters, others are support workers, volunteer community educators and more,” she said.

The brigade was first established in 1991, according to Wendi, with a group of dedicated volunteers coming together to fight wild fires, conduct hazard reductions and controlled burns and also assisting with flood clean up operations.

“It started off as the McIlwraith Rural Fire Brigade before the name changed to McIlwraith/Damascus RFB,” she said.

“Later, it was again changed to what we are known as now, the Gin Gin Rural Fire Brigade.”

The annual charity pig racing event will be on again at the Gin Gin Hotel this weekend.

The weekend fundraiser event will feature a range of other activities on the day, including face painting, raffles, a jumping castle and live music from country singer Caitlyn Shadbolt.

Wendi said the whole community was invited to head along to support the rural firies and hoped this year's event would be as successful as the last.

“The money will go towards extensions to the fire station to park our new vehicle which was purchased with some of the funds from last year's pig races,” she said.

The Gin Gin Rural Fire Brigade Annual Pig Races will be held from 2.30pm on Sunday, 2 May at the Gin Gin Hotel.
