Sunday games tighten race for premiership win

Easts Magpies’ Matt Craven braces for the tackle of Waves Tigers’ Maeva Havea in their Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership clash at Salter Oval on Sunday.

Wallaroos proverbially set the cat among the pigeons, ambushing an admittedly depleted Wests Panthers 32-8 in their Rugby League Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership clash at Eskdale Park on Saturday.

Despite the loss, the Panthers retain the lead on the ladder on 10 points, but they are now just one in front of Easts Magpies who outgunned Waves Tigers 28-10 at Salter Oval on Sunday before reigning champions Past Brothers returned to the winners’ list at the expense of Hervey Bay Seagulls 22-18.

The Seagulls hold on to third place on 7 points, but they are now just one point in advance of Brothers and Wallaroos, with Waves dropping back to sixth and last on 4 points.

Centre Brad Wex and evergreen five-eighth and dual BRL Player of the Year Shaun Collins each bagged doubles for Roos, while three-times BRL Leading Try Scorer Magpies centre Trent Seeds broke the shackles with a hat-trick, but it was the playing comeback of their coach Brent Kuskey at hooker which provided the missing link and seemingly transformed them into a real contender.

Brothers snapped a two-match losing streak, sentencing the Bay to their third straight defeat, but it was only the boot of Zak Bainbridge which won the day as both sides scored four tries, but he converted three of them to the Seagulls’ one.

In the Northern Districts, hosts South Kolan Sharks powered on at the top of the table with a 34-8 drubbing of premiers Avondale Tigers, while Gin Gin Hawks bounced back from their loss to the Sharks to consolidate second position with a 60-10 blitz of the win-less Miriam Vale Magpies, with Cameron Ross amassing 28 points with two tries and 10 goals.

In the Women’s League Tag, the Tigers roared against the Hornets 24-6 in the all-Avondale affair.

AFL

Captain Jason Bethune led from the front with five goals as defending champions Across The Waves Eagles hit their straps in the Wide Bay Marquis Macadamias Seniors Premiership with a 12.5 (77) to 4.12 (36) triumph over 2020 beaten grand finalists Bay Power at Frank Coulthard Oval on Saturday.

But Brothers Bulldogs remain anchored on 0 points after they were put to the sword by their hosts, the unbeaten Hervey Bay Bombers 14.19 (103) to 1.2 (8).

FOOTBALL

Golden Boot leader Nykodah Smith notched another hat-trick of goals as hosts Across The Waves (ATW) shut out title holders United Park Eagles (UPE) 4-0 in their Wide Bay Premier League Men’s showdown on Saturday.

The heavyweights duo went into the combat as 2 of the 3 co-pilots on the ladder, with Waves now sharing poll position with Fraser Flames, who also turned it on at home to edge out Bingera 2-1.

Early season leaders Brothers-Aston Villa continued their slide with a 1-0 home loss to Doon Villa, while SC Corinthians, who posted their first win a week earlier, tried hard again but were pipped by KSS Jets 3-2, and Diggers finally opened their account with a 4-3 away dispatch of Sunbury Blues.

ATW moved into third place in the Premier League Women’s standings with a 1-0 result against Bingera.

HOCKEY

Joel Latham struck three times while Matthew Quaite, Jerry Burtt and Adam Haradine each hammered in two goals as Waves Cities bounced back from their shock loss to Raiders/Rovers seven days earlier to thrash Arrows/Athletics 11-1 in their Bundaberg Division 1 Men’s duel at Hinkler Park on Saturday.

Waves Cities stalwart Jamie Rach weighs up his options as he is shadowed by an Arrows/Athletics player in their Bundaberg Division 1 Men’s showdown at Hinkler Park on Saturday.

Their Division 1 women also marched on in their campaign for two straight premierships, disposing of Arrows 4-0.

It was also a red-letter day for Raiders/Rovers, also doing the Division 1 double, with their Men outgunning four-times defending premiers All Blacks 3-1, and Women racing away 5-1 on the back of doubles to Jasmine Fagg and Sue Kendall.

NETBALL

Waves Gold continued to sweep all before them in their quest for back-to-back Bundaberg Warren Family Homes Division 1 Premiership crowns with a 61-44 romp against Brothers Hurricanes at the Superpark on Saturday.

Fusion Solomons were also impressive in accounting for Waves Blue 44-29, while Alloway Blue ran out 55-43 winners against Natives Magpies.
