RSPCA Bundaberg is hosting a market in conjunction with its annual Cupcake Day to provide pet owners access to discounted products and services, while raising money for the local shelter.

The market, which will be held on Sunday 28 August, will have a number of products available such as free or low-cost pet items such as bedding, bowls, collars and leads as well as discounted microchipping and hydro bathing.

Veterinary and behavioural staff will also be available to discuss medical and training issues.

RSPCA Bundaberg Animal Care Manager Lorin Grey said she hoped the market created a fun and supportive atmosphere to not only raise funds for the work of the local shelter, but also to show that RSPCA was here to support Bundaberg Region pet owners.

“We want people to know how and where to access support for their pets when they need it,” Lorin said.

“In Bundaberg it's becoming impossible to ignore the communities of people living in tents and caravans around the city and we are seeing a lot of pets surrendered that have not been microchipped, vaccinated or flea treated.

“We understand that this is due, in part, to financial strain so we will be offering discounted microchipping and hydro bathing on the day and our partner veterinary clinic, Sugarland Animal Hospital, will have a vet and nurse on site for people to ask general veterinary advice.

“We'll also have a ‘pet op-shop' where people can pick up basic pet care items like bowls, leads, harnesses and beds, for only a gold-coin donation.

“We want people to know that if they are really struggling to provide for their animals, that they can reach out to us and we can provide whatever we can in the way of food and bedding from what we have available at the time.”

Lorin said the funds raised from the market would go back into supporting the range of costs associated with running the shelter.

“This year, we are hoping to upgrade our cat adoption rooms as well as construct a sensory garden for our shelter dogs,” she said.

“More broadly, fundraising money contributes to the cost of keeping our local animal welfare inspector out on the road rescuing animals from dire situations.”
