Captain Mitchell Parsons scored a superb unbeaten 100 to lead Brothers to victory over East Bundy Magpies in their Rum City Foods Division 1 clash at Salter Oval on Saturday

Captain Mitchell Parsons led from the front with an unbeaten 100 as Brothers chased down East Bundy Magpies’ imposing total of 8-247.

Brothers won the game with six wickets in hand and 4.4 overs to spare in their Bundaberg Cricket Rum City Foods Division 1 Premiership fourth round showdown at Salter Oval last Saturday.

The Magpies recovered from 7-117 to stake their claim, thanks mainly to a hard-hitting unconquered 70 from No. 9 Roy Heath.

They looked to be in total control when they had Brothers teetering at 4-83, until Mitchell and best mate Sam Pearson combined in an unbroken stand of 165 with Sam also excelling with a determined 62.

Brothers were however dislodged from the top of the table by Waves, who thrashed reigning champions Norths by 217 runs with brothers Kori and Hayden Pope leading the charge with 73 and 53 respectively, then paceman Matthew Pozzebon the destroyer with 5-18.

Brothers also staged a great run chase to defeat Magpies by four wickets in Division 2 with one of their young guns, Pat Marshman, the stand-out with an unbeaten 47 and 4-25.

Mitchell Parsons’ century capped a red-letter 24 hours for the 22-year-old after also scoring a superb unbeaten 53 as Headlands Pies started their Aussie Bundy Big Bash T20 title defence in the best possible way.

They had a six-wicket first-round victory over Searle’s RV Centre Vikings on Friday night, with captain Brendan Handley also outstanding with 51 at a strike-rate of 145%.

There was one other century recorded for the round, with Sam Stuchbery notching an unbeaten 107 from 81 balls for Waves against Hervey Bay Colts in Junior Cricket 3-Under-16’s after Tarah Staines had cut loose with 5-21.

Sam Stuchbery smashed an unconquered 107 to spearhead Waves to a big win over Hervey Bay Colts in their Under-16 showdown at Kendall’s Flat on Saturday

On the representative scene, Wide Bay’s batting woes continued as they were trounced by Sandgate-Redcliffe by eight wickets in their Queensland Premier Cricket Lord Taverner’s clash at Salter Oval on Sunday.

Bundaberg’s Toby Lamond played a lone hand with 54 in their paltry total of 111, while fellow local Lachlan Heycox claimed an early wicket in his 1-18, and Sam Stuchbery picked up the other wicket, but the Southerners were always in control.

The win-less Wide Bay will find it tough again when they travel to play Redlands, who have won five of their nine games, this Sunday.

All Bundaberg senior and junior cricket tomorrow has been cancelled due to the very wet pitches and the prediction of more heavy rain.

Rugby

Inspirational captain/coach Tom Akers bagged a hat-trick of tries as Waves Falcons snatched a 24-18 victory from the jaws of defeat in their Rugby Bundaberg Bundy Hot Gas Spring Cup fourth round battle at Brothers Sports Club on Saturday.

Down by one point in the dying minute, Falcons dug deep for a deserved victory, with Tom’s elder brother John also chipping in with two conversions.

Meanwhile, East Bundaberg Pythons proved themselves as the real deal, maintaining their perfect record from three matches, strangling perennial heavyweights Fraser Coast Mariners 30-15.

Tomorrow, a fierce physical contest is on the cards in the showdown between the two unbeaten sides, with reigning premiers West Barbarians hosting Pythons at Jubilee Park at 6.30pm, after Mariners suit up against Falcons at 4.30pm.

Softball

Impressive first-round winners Western Suburbs Panthers were brought crashing back to earth, suffering two crushing losses in their Coral Coast Softball A Grade Ladies double-header at Brothers Sports Club on Saturday, with Brothers United Firesticks turning the tables on them 16-2, then Waves Tsunamis also showing no mercy in a 19-1 drubbing to make it two wins from as many matches to launch their campaign.

Tsunamis will be put to the test however when they take on three-times defending champions Firesticks at Brothers Sports Complex at 2.20pm tomorrow.

Panthers will travel to Hervey Bay to take on Terrors.

There is just one A Grade Men’s game tomorrow with Waves Schooners taking on Bargara Bombers at 4.10pm at Brothers.
