Australia Day Aquathon a unique event

Australia Day Aquathon
Australia Day Aquathon has been held for more than five years at Norville Park Pool.

Friends and families are invited to grab their swimmers and joggers and head to Norville Park Pool for a splash in the annual Australia Day Aquathon.

Organised by Bargara Triathlon Club, vice president Colin Stollery said the Australia Day Aquathon was a unique event, open to everyone.

“Unlike a triathlon there's no bike leg,” he said.

“Better still, the swim is in the flat waters of the Norville (Park) Pool, with the run on a closed circuit around the Norville (Park) Pool complex.”

The event has been held for more than five years and Colin said it was the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of Australia Day.

“We have hosted this event each year on Australia Day, and even considered relocating it to the beach because that's very Australian,” Colin said.

“But we concluded the pool opens the event to those interested to try somethingwith more consistent water conditions.

“As a club we want to provide a sporting event for participants to celebrate Australia Day in an active way.

“This year we have even attracted competitors from Brisbane, which is very encouraging as we continue to build this event.”

He said the Australia Day Aquathon gave the community a chance to test the waters of an endurance sport in a relaxed atmosphere.

“This is an event for swimmers and runners, from age two years through to adults,” Colin said.

“Each age group has different race distances, with the kids under 10 years swimming in the 25 metre pool for added safety.

“There is also a team race for those who'd prefer to share the swim or run with someone more capable.

“You don't have to be a pro to give it a go!

“Our Australia Day Aquathon welcomes folks of all levels of sporting abilities, even the kids are encouraged to join us.”

Australia Day Aquathon distances are specific to an age group with the event including:

  • Hatchlings (2-6yo): 40m wade and 200m run
