For more than a decade the annual Move It Expo has helped to inspire community members to look at their health and become active.
On Sunday, the Bundaberg Multiplex will be a hive of activity as the eleventh Move It Expo showcases everything from local sporting clubs, health and wellbeing providers to community groups.
Community members will be entertained and informed as special guests and performers put on demonstrations for all to see.
Bundaberg’s own surfing scientist Ruben Meerman will be on stage to share his knowledge about weight loss through the field of science.
Ruben’s interest in the science of human metabolism was sparked by his own experience of losing 16 kilograms.
Research undertaken by Ruben revealed that 84 per cent of the mass people lose during weight loss is converted to carbon dioxide and exhaled.
The remaining 16 per cent turns into crystal clear water.
His calculations were published in the British Medical Journal and his TEDx talks about breathing and weight loss have been viewed more than 13 million times.
Move it Expo a chance to look at lifestyle
Now, Ruben is encouraging the Bundaberg community to take a look at their own lifestyle and to head along to the Move It Expo where he’ll share information on the Eat Breathe Move Project.
Delivered by Bundaberg Region Council, the Eat Breathe Move Project is funded by the Department of Tourism Innovation and Sport and Health and Wellbeing Queensland under Round 2 of the ActiveKIT Program.
“The reason you breathe more during physical activity is because you’re converting more food into carbon dioxide,” Ruben said.
“Simply going for a walk can make you breathe four or five times more than sitting still.
“Understanding this can do wonders for your motivation.”
Ruben said he was excited to share his knowledge with the Bundaberg Region and he hoped to motivate the community to move more.
“I’ll be using liquid nitrogen to freeze people’s breath so they can see the frozen carbon dioxide they just exhaled,” he said.
“The medical benefits of physical activity are almost magical, and you can get them by simply going for a walk.
“You’ll feel better and it’s free so let’s go!”
Plenty on offer at Move It Expo
Sport and Recreation portfolio spokesperson Cr Vince Habermann said more than 35 stallholders would be part of this year’s Move it Expo with plenty on offer for the community.
“The Move It Expo has been providing the community members of the Bundaberg Region an opportunity to find a sporting club, organisation or business that will help their physical and mental wellbeing for more than a decade,” he said.
“Sporting clubs, health, fitness and wellbeing providers will be set up and ready to share their passion with community members of all ages.
“From futsal, taekwondo, archery, squash to yoga and drumming, there will certainly be something to spark an interest in everyone.”
The 2023 Move it Expo will be held at the Bundaberg Multiplex on Sunday 12 February from 10 am to 1 pm.
