Coffee drinkers will be able to support those living it tough on Friday with fundraising initiative Cafesmart being held at two local businesses.

Yellow will be the theme of the day at Alowishus and The Coffee Club at Stockland, with $1 from every coffee and cupcake donated to organisations that support those who are experiencing homelessness.

Cafésmart is an initiative of Street Smart – Action against Homelessness with over $1.85m raised in the past 11 years.

Alowishus has been involved with CafeSmart since 2013 and to date the café has raised more than $7700 from coffee sales alone.

In previous years the funds raised in Bundaberg were given to Edon Place for hygiene packs for local women who had experienced domestic violence.

Last year funds were also donated to the Sleepbus Project.

CafeSmart brings together coffee roasters, cafés and coffee drinkers around the country to help people who are homeless.

Participating cafés generously donate $1 per coffee sold to fund projects.

This year for Café Smart Alowishus will be:

• Contributing $1 for every hot drink they sell on the day and encouraging customers to match the donation with a dollar of their own

• Staff will be dressing up in yellow for the day

• Delicious yellow cupcakes will be for sale and a $1 donation will be made for each one sold

CEO, StreetSmart Australia Adam Robinson said with more than one in every 200 people homeless in Australia, something more needed to be done.

“When services working on the frontlines are telling us that this is a figure is likely to be much higher, and we have coherent public response – that is a huge cause for concern,” he said.

“Most people want to do something about it, and to help people that are struggling in their own community.

“CafeSmart is really a grassroots movement that is giving people a vehicle to effect some change and positively impact people’s lives.”
