Bundaberg Hospital long stays reduced significantly from 665 in the September 2022 quarter down to 103 for the same period in 2023.
Wide Bay HHS had also more than halved the number patients being treated in the emergency department for longer than 24 hours, despite an 8% increase in ED presentations.
Instead, patients are being promptly transferred to wards and short stay units, or receiving
enhanced care from allied health staff and our Hospital in the Home teams.
Total long stays reduced from 1616 for the period July to September 2022 down 718 in the
same period this year.
This reduction was particularly significant in Bundaberg Hospital where long stays reduced from 665 in July-September 2022 down to 103 for the same period this year.
Wide Bay emergency departments cared for 32,899 patients from July to September this year.
That’s an additional 2437 additional patients being treated by our teams (an 8% increase)
compared to the same time last year.
Chief Executive Debbie Carroll said emergency department beds could be a busy, sometimes stressful, environment which was best suited to managing emergencies in the short term.
“It’s important for patient wellbeing to be able to move to a more appropriate setting, such as a ward, when longer term treatment is required,” Debbie Carroll said.
“Our improved initiatives including short stay admission units, improved ward capacity and more allied health staff such as pharmacy, physiotherapy and social workers on weekends mean that people are being treated in a more appropriate setting as they recover.
“Our Transit Hubs in Hervey Bay and Bundaberg will soon be open on weekends and for
extended hours midweek, ensuring that you can receive appropriate care when you need it.
“While we are still working hard to further reduce wait times, I’m pleased to see this consistent improvement across almost all of our emergency department measures over the past year.”
