Notice – Tirroan Waste Facility closure

0

The Tirroan Waste Facility will be closed on Wednesday 8 May and and the Tip Shop only will be closed from Tuesday 7 May to Friday 28 June 2024.

Council is converting the landfill to a waste transfer station with a new gatehouse building to assist with the recording of transactions at the site.

The slab for the new gatehouse building is scheduled to be poured on Wednesday 8 May. This makes it impossible for the site to be open while this work is being completed.

The closest facility for residents with a tip shop is the Childers Waste Facility and is open Monday to Friday 7.30 am to 12.30 pm and weekend trade from 9 am to 12.30 pm.

Council reminds all users of the site that there are changed traffic conditions during the construction phase and asks users of the site to take extra care when using the site.

There will be extended closure needed at the site in upcoming weeks to allow for the road upgrades and asphalting within the site, for which Council will advise users prior to the extended closure.

Why is this construction happening?

The landfill site is approaching its end of life and if Council were to expand the landfill a weighbridge would be required under State legislation. This would incur significant costs to ratepayers and there is limited room on the current site for a weighbridge.

The change to a transfer station will ensure greater separation of recyclable materials occurs and will allow all waste to be transferred to our Regional Landfill at Cedars Road South Bingera which is a modern landfill that has leachate control, landfill capping, highly efficient compactions equipment and landfill gas capture systems.
