As part of National Reconciliation Week, the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre is proud to present the free screening of highly acclaimed Australian film Sweet As.

Set in the remote Pilbara Country of Western Australia, Sweet As tells the story of troubled 16-year-old Indigenous girl Murra, played by Shantae Barnes-Cowan.

After an explosive incident with her addict mother, Murra finds herself abandoned and on the cusp of being lost in the child protection system.

Murra’s uncle, who is also a local police officer, throws her an unusual lifeline in the form of a unique photo safari.

Before she knows it Murra is travelling down a dusty highway in a minibus with other ‘at risk’ teens and two charismatic team leaders.

Life becomes more focused when a camera is put into Murra’s hands.

Capturing her story through the lens encourages her to be bold, slow down and take a good look at all the things she’s missed through her struggles to keep going.

Sweet As is the first feature film from Indigenous writer-director Jub Clerc, whose own desire for filmmaking was sparked by a photographic safari through the Pilbara as a teenager.

The film is also a story of Country, interpreted by the spectacular cinematography of Katie Milwright.

Tasma Walton plays the owner and driver of the minibus Mitch and along the journey teaches the teenagers to show proper respect for Country.

Mitch’s message to her youthful passengers is ‘let this trip allow you to be still and let Country talk to you and heal you.’

Sweet As is an uplifting, inspiring coming-of-age film about unconventional friendships, first crushes and finding who you are on the road less travelled.
