The Gin Gin Library is inviting the community to join thousands of others around Australia in reading Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) shines an international spotlight on the important work local libraries do every day, while promoting reading together to encourage language development, learning and literacy.

Last year NSS saw over 2 million kids reading simultaneously and this year the goal is to support libraries, teachers, parents and caregivers in Australia, New Zealand and around the world to increase the number of children involved.

Bowerbird Blues

Bowerbird Blues is written by Aura Parker, who is also the artist behind the book’s exquisite and captivating watercolour illustrations.

The picture book tells the delightful story of a beautiful bowerbird on a quest to find blue treasures.

As the bowerbird’s search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city, a tale of longing and connection unfolds.

Swooping and snatching up vibrant blue natural and unnatural objects for his treasure trove, the bowerbird attracts something greater and more fulfilling.

National Simultaneous Storytime event at Gin Gin Library

The Gin Gin Library will feature a reading of Bowerbird Blues, along with a variety of activities, presented by Children’s Discovery Teacher Tamara Kelly for National Simultaneous Storytime.

Tamara said she would be expanding the book with science, singing and art activities focusing on the colour blue, UV light and the behaviours of the bowerbird.

“I wrote this Storytime Science Unit last September when the book was announced,” Tamara said.

“I’m really keen to put it into action and I am hoping a whole heap of libraries will be doing these activities along with us in Gin Gin because I have also sent it to the 800 libraries with whom I work.”

The Childers Library will also celebrate the Bowerbird Blue book during its normal Storytime Session on Wednesday 22 May at 9.30 am and Bundaberg Library’s event will be held on Thursday 23 May at 10 am.
