Accessibility and inclusivity is the focus of the future for the region’s tourism sector after new funding to elevate the accessible tourism experience was secured.

Bundaberg Tourism is a successful applicant of the Bundaberg Region Inclusive Tourism Legacy Building project, with its $5 million Accessible Tourism Elevate Fund supporting the Queensland tourism industry.

Bundaberg Tourism CEO Katherine Reid said the funding would enable the Bundaberg Region to set a benchmark for accessibility standards in the tourism industry across the region.

“By prioritising accessibility and inclusivity, local operators can create an enhanced experience that will resonate with all visitors of all abilities,” she said.

“Completion of this project will mark the next step in our region’s journey toward building a legacy of a truly inclusive destination, providing authentic, accessible and transformative visitor experiences for all”.

Improvements proposed under the successful application include:

  • Sensory audio guides to provide perceptible travel information, increasing confidence in decision-making for people of all abilities
  • Developing a dedicated digital guide to assist visitors in planning their trips more inclusively, ensuring that everyone can explore and enjoy the Bundaberg Region to its fullest potential
  • A sensory-friendly all-inclusive event, incorporating universal design principles aligned with an existing destination event.
The project is set to commence in the coming months and will conclude in early 2025.

The iconic Bundy Belle River Cruises is another local experience provider to successfully secure funding under the Accessible Tourism Elevate Fund.

The grant will facilitate the acquisition of a flat-bottom vessel, enabling Bundy Belle to offer accessible river cruises along the Burnett River in Bundaberg, starting from the accessible infrastructure at Riverside Parklands.

Lisa and Dale Lockley from Bundaberg Ferry Company said the purchase of a wheelchair accessible vessel presented an opportunity to expand and enhance their visitor offering.

“Bundy Belle has been committed to providing memorable experiences along the Burnett River for over 24 years,” the duo said,

“Now with the addition of a fully accessible vessel, we are taking that commitment to another level, where everyone can share in the history and beauty of Bundaberg.”

The Accessible Tourism Elevate Fund is an initiative under the Year of Accessible Tourism.

The fund is awarded through the Queensland Government’s Access Project Grant and is administered by the Queensland Department of Tourism and Sport.

  1. It would be nice to see some high class hotels here instead of old motels. There is no accomodation of at least 4 star. What happened to the high rise hotel which was going to be built near Brothers? This would have provided excellent accomodation close to the airport.
