The Queensland Road Cycling Championships are underway in the Bundaberg Region with 270 competitors attending from every corner of the state and as far away as Tasmania taking up the opportunity to compete against the best from Queensland.
Hosted by Bundaberg Cycling Club, the event has been supported by Bundaberg Regional Council through its Sport Championship Funding Program with a junior event hosted today in the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens.
The three day competition continues, with Bundaberg Cycling Club president Wayne Morden sharing more about the event:
What are the benefits of hosting an event like this in the region?
We are racing across five locations in the Bundaberg region over three days – Bundaberg Botanic Gardens, South Kolan, Tirroan , Bundaberg Go Kart Club, Bargara Headlands.
The Bundaberg Botanic Gardens was a natural option for us as it is the perfect venue for the younger competitors in the Junior 9-13 categories.
Where we can we like to minimise the junior exposure to open roads and traffic risks and facilities like this are perfect for the younger cyclists.
What is the length of the course?
The Botanic Garden course is a technical circuit about 1.2 km in length.
They will be racing anywhere from 8 to 12 km depending on their age category.
For the juniors we are also utilising the Bundaberg Go Kart track for one of the other Junior races.
It is again away from traffic but a brilliant circuit to test the little legs out away from traffic.
What are the other locations in the Queensland Road Cycling Championships?
– South Kolan, Friday: 11 am to 4 pm.
– Tirroan Hotel, Saturday: 7 am to 4 pm.
– Bargara Headlands, Sunday: 7 am to 2 pm.
Why is this event important for the region?
The ability to deliver events like this are critical to developing our region as a sporting and tourism preferred destination.
This event alone generates in excess of $500,000 and the combined income generated through Bundaberg Cycling Club hosted events will see us generate in the region of $800,000 of economic stimulus to the region through the hard work of volunteers.
The Bundaberg Cycling Club would like to thank the Tirroan, Bargara Headlands and South Kolan communities (South Kolan Football Club especially) for accommodating and supporting us to deliver this event along with our partners The Waves Sports Club, Bargara Headlands, Giant Bundaberg.
