Community members are invited to attend a movie fundraiser with the screening of the classic film The Mango Tree, which was filmed in Bundaberg and features the locally owned DeDion (pictured in the above photo during London to Brighton 1989) to help support the Bundaberg sleepbus project.

Enjoy a nostalgic trip back to the region during the 1940s with the special movie fundraiser of The Mango Tree in support of the sleepbus Bundaberg project.

The community is invited to come together for an unforgettable evening featuring the 1977 Australian classic The Mango Tree, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the beloved 1974 book by Ronald McKie.

The Mango Tree is the story of a young man, Jamie Carr, played by lead actor Christopher Pate, growing up in Bundaberg during the early 1940s.

A highlight of the Mango Tree movie fundraiser will be a Q and A session with Christopher Pate who will share his experience of working on the classic.

Bundaberg Regional Council Community Services portfolio spokesperson Cr Tracey McPhee said the evening was not just about enjoying a great movie, but it would also be a chance to support the sleepbus Bundaberg project and help vulnerable community members.

“We’re excited to host this special screening of The Mango Tree to support the local sleepbus project,” she said.

“It’s not only an opportunity for our community to relive a cherished piece of Australian cinema but also a chance to support a very important cause.

“The sleepbus Bundaberg project provides crucial support for those in need, and it’s wonderful to see our community rallying together to contribute.”

Bundaberg Vintage Vehicle Club will also make an appearance before the screening to support the cause and community members are encouraged to dress in their period costumes to add to the fun and immerse themselves in the era of the film.

“I encourage friends to come together and grab some popcorn to help make a difference in our community,” Cr McPhee said.

“All proceeds from the evening will benefit the sleepbus Bundaberg project, which offers safe and supportive services to those experiencing homelessness.”
