Get excited gardeners and plant lovers as Bundaberg Bush House and Garden Club’s twice-yearly Monster Plant Sale returns Sunday, 10 November.
Held at North Progress Hall from 7 am to 12 noon, the sale is a great opportunity for green-thumbed community members to buy new plants and get advice from directly from the growers.
We asked Bundaberg Bush House and Garden Club Vice-President Kym Kington to tell us more about the sale.
Can you provide an overview of the event and what inspired you to organise it?
The club has been running the Monster Plant Sale for about five years now.
Most of our members propagate their cuttings/plants and this was a way for us to sell those plants as our greenhouses get very full.
The sale is held twice a year.
What are the main activities or highlights attendees can look forward to?
Attendees can expect to see the hall full of plants that have been grown by our members, in our climate.
Just over 60 tables full of plants grown here and we will also have a raffle running.
Most people who attend the event are impressed with the quality and price of the plants.
Also buying plants grown locally they have a better chance of survival when the customer takes them home.
They also have the opportunity to speak with our members about the best way to look after the plants they purchase.
What is the history of this event, and how has it evolved over the years?
I have only been involved with the club for about eight years.
They used to organise a large gardening event at the Civic Centre called Gardening with the Gurus.
But due to costs of insurance, hiring a speaker (like Costa or Don Burke) and the cost to hire the hall was just getting ridiculous so they downsized to our Monster Plant Sale which is extremely successful.
This year we will have a couple of members selling from outside the hall because we have outgrown the North Progress Hall and may have to look for a bigger venue.
How do you hope attendees will feel after participating in the event?
I hope that everyone that attends finds themselves a plant on their wish list.
Our members are very happy to answer any gardening questions and how to look after the plants they have just purchased.
Everyone compliments us on the quality, variety and price of plants available by our members.
Attendees usually ask us the date of the next sale and mark their calendars.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with the community about this event?
There will be a line up at the door before 7 am. If you have never attended before I suggest you come and have a look.
Bring your cash, bags / boxes to take your purchases home.
