Bundaberg continues to lead the charge in renewable energy workforce development, celebrating the latest delivery of two key training programs under the Green Jobs, Bright Future for Bundaberg initiative.

Supported by $700,000 in funding from the Australian Government’s Local Jobs Program, the courses include the Certificate II in Renewable Energy and a second successful round of the Battery Electric Vehicle Inspection and Servicing Skill Set, offered through TAFE Queensland.

The Battery Electric Vehicle Inspection and Servicing Skill Set has already proven to be in high demand, equipping automotive mechanics with the specialised skills required to work on electric and hybrid vehicles.

Amy Phillips from Len Webb Automotive enrolled in this round of the course after hearing about it from a colleague.

She emphasised the importance of adapting to emerging needs within the automotive industry.

“The industry is evolving, and it’s so important to upskill to keep pace with new technologies,” Amy said.

“There are specific regulations for working on electric vehicles in Australia, including standards and licensing requirements.

“This week, we learned how to safely depower an electric vehicle before servicing it—which is critical knowledge given the higher voltage in EVs compared to standard cars.”

The initiative has leveraged government funding to enhance training resources in Bundaberg.

This includes transporting an electric vehicle from TAFE Queensland’s Brisbane campus and bringing in specialist trainers from across the state.

Importantly, local TAFE Queensland teachers also participated in the training, building their expertise to ensure these courses can be retained and delivered in Bundaberg Region long-term.

TAFE Queensland East Coast General Manager Mark Reilly praised the ongoing success of the program.

“By delivering these courses, we’re not only providing cutting-edge training but also ensuring Bundaberg is prepared for the workforce needs of a rapidly advancing industry,” Mr. Reilly said.

The Green Jobs, Bright Future for Bundaberg initiative aims to prepare more than 80 local residents aged 15 and above for careers in renewable energy.

Through these training programs, Bundaberg is building a resilient and future-focused workforce, capable of meeting national demands for renewable energy and sustainable technologies.

The Certificate II in Electrotechnology, Cert II in Renewable Energy, Battery Electric Vehicle Inspection and Servicing Skill Set, Hybrid and Electric Vehicle skill set and Solar skill sets are delivered through a combination of in-person, online, and hybrid learning formats, ensuring flexibility for participants.

  1. What bright future? We have a problem well you know how they had a baby bonus those kids are the ones that are coming through. The big increase was in 2008 & onwards they are now starting to be 15+ years of age… In QLD we need to prepare for 24% – 26% more kids that need Jobs & accommodation.

What we have done is no where near adequate. Yes the unemployment rate is down after COVID but if we don’t really focus as much as we can on boosting employment & housing it is going to be temporary it could even get worse then COVID for youth unemployment & they will have no where to move to escape the problem either.
