Top travel blog Lonely Planet has named Lady Elliot Island as the best place in the world to snorkel and Mon Repos as the number one destination for seeing turtles in the wild.
In a recent blog, Lady Elliot Island came in at number one for its snorkelling appeal beating out locations around the world from Brazil to Hawaii.
The Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort team recently shared the news on Facebook.
“We’re absolutely over the moon to share that Lonely Planet has named Lady Elliot Island the BEST place in the world to snorkel!” the post reads.
“Our pristine waters, thriving coral reefs, and diverse marine life make Lady Elliot Island a true paradise for snorkellers of all ages and experience levels.
“Spot manta rays, vibrant fish, reef sharks, turtles or humpback whales (in season)! Every moment here is unforgettable.
“Thank you to Lonely Planet for recognising the beauty and biodiversity of our little slice of paradise on the Southern Great Barrier Reef.”
Lonely Planet’s article on best places to see sea turtles also shined a spotlight on the Bundaberg Region while highlighting the positive impact responsible tourism can have on protecting vulnerable habitats.
Bundaberg Tourism CEO Katherine Reid said Mon Repos offered a front-row seat to one of nature’s most magical moments.
“We’re thrilled to share that Mon Repos has been named the number one spot in Lonely Planet’s list of the six best places in the world to see turtles in the wild,” Katherine said.
“The Mon Repos Turtle Centre not only offers visitors a chance to get up close to these incredible creatures, but also educates us on responsible ways to watch turtles and raises awareness of their endangered status.
“This global recognition highlights the incredible work of our local rangers, researchers, and volunteers, who make this special experience possible every turtle season.”
Katherine congratulated both the Lady Elliot Island team and Mon Repos team on the recognition of their efforts to share the beauty and biodiversity of the Southern Great Barrier Reef with visitors.
