Bundaberg schools and organisations came together to help make a difference for the environment during Bundaberg Regional Council’s recent Clean Up Australia Day activities.
Council’s Natural Areas team joined forces with students from St Joseph’s Primary School last week to clean up along the creek at Central Park, where three full bags of general waste and one of recycling was collected.
The team then met with Yourtown trainees to remove litter from Queens Park on Tuesday to prevent rubbish from entering the adjacent Burnett River, protecting local wildlife and marine ecosystems.
A selection of rubbish, equating to 10 large bags, was collected from the location.
Natural Areas and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Jason Bartels said the event was a great example of organisations working together for a cleaner and healthier region.
“Bundaberg Regional Council is proud to be a Reef Guardian Council, taking proactive steps to protect our waterways and reduce the impact of marine debris,” Cr Bartels said.
“Through our Waterways Rubbish Removal Program, we are supporting the maintenance of our rivers and oceans, and events like Clean Up Australia Day help us achieve this goal.
“A huge thank you to the Yourtown trainees and our Natural Areas team who rolled up their sleeves to make Queens Park cleaner and safer for our community and local wildlife.”
Yourtown Trainer Jeremiah Tkatchenko said the event provided an important hands-on opportunity for trainees currently enrolled in a 21-week Conservation and Ecosystem Management program.
“We are excited to help out in making sure the parks are clean and making sure we are looking after the environment,” Mr Tkatchenko said at the event.
“It’s also about making sure the area is not toxic for the animals and the wildlife around.”
The Clean Up Australia Day events were one of many initiatives Council delivers throughout the year as part of its ongoing commitment to protecting local natural areas and waterways as part of its commitment as a Reef Guardian Council.
