After nearly five decades of dedicated service, Amber Larsen – a familiar and friendly face at the Gin Gin Neighbourhood Centre – is retiring.
The Neighbourhood and Service Centre Support Officer said her passion for community service had been the driving force behind her many roles at Council over the years.
Amber began her career in January 1977, fresh out of school and stepping into her first role as a junior Clerical Officer with the Kolan Shire Council.
From there, her journey through local government spanned 48 years and evolved through changing councils and growing responsibilities.
“I have worked for Bundaberg Regional Council in varying roles and capacities– full time, casual and permanent part time,” Amber said.
“I started with Kolan Shire Council in Gin Gin as a junior Clerical Officer in January 1977, later going casual while my children were young, as well as being appointed Assistant Librarian in Kolan Shire Library in 1990, whilst still working as a casual in the office.”

Throughout her various roles, Amber said her heart remained firmly in assisting the community and her dedication and friendly demeanour helped shape the everyday experience of residents and staff alike.
“My roles have always been administration and customer service,” Amber said.
“I’ve enjoyed working with and forming lifetime friendships with many staff over the years, being a part of great teams and getting to know and assisting the local community.”
Beyond the desk and daily duties, Amber said it was Gin Gin that had held a special place in her heart.
“I love living and working in Gin Gin and serving the local community whom I have known and built a great rapport and trust with over many years,” Amber said.
“I often have people asking for me as a familiar face to help them with their concerns as they feel secure with someone they know.”
As she prepared to step into retirement, Amber reflected on a career filled with service, connection and pride.
“I’ve enjoyed working with Kolan Shire and Bundaberg Regional Council and serving the local community and now look forward to having more time at home and on the farm and to spend with family and friends and travel,” she said.
