Bunnings has announced that Braden Krebs from Brothers Bulldogs AFC is one of the first local footy volunteers to be recognised as part of the ‘Legend of the Tongs’ initiative, in partnership with the AFL.
Bunnings Legend of the Tongs is a nationwide search to reward and celebrate the local legends who fire up the barbecue weekly at their local Aussie Rules footy clubs.
This recognition highlights Braden’s unwavering dedication to his club and the positive impact he has on his community.
Braden has been involved in the Brothers Bulldogs AFC for 20 years, playing and volunteering in a variety of ways and is currently President of the club, a role he has been in for the last four years.
It’s not easy to run a successful AFL Club in a town like Bundaberg that is 100% dominated by Rugby League and the hometown of the Kafusi Brothers.
However, Braden has always put his hand up to support the club and the community.
“I love volunteering for Brothers Bulldogs AFC because it gives me the chance to connect with a great community,” he said.
“There’s something special about being part of a club that brings people together, not just for the love of the game, but for the sense of belonging and support it offers.
“Watching the club grow, knowing I’ve contributed in my own way, is incredibly rewarding. It’s more than just footy—it’s family.”
Reflecting on the last 20 years, Braden’s favourite memory was winning the senior premiership as a player in 2010.
“It was an unforgettable day where the club achieved something truly special—our seniors took home the premiership, and our Under 13s, 15s, 17s, and reserves all won their grand finals too,” he said.
“It was an incredible celebration of hard work, teamwork, and club spirit across every level.”
As part of his prize, Brothers Bulldogs will receive a barbecue prize pack, including a Jumbuck 6 Burner BBQ and a Bunnings pop-up marque.
Braden is now also in the running to score a trip for two to attend the Toyota AFL Grand Final as well as the opportunity to be named ‘Legend of the Golden Tongs’ and win $25,000 in Bunnings products and materials for their club.
“Brothers Bulldogs AFC deserves to be crowned the ultimate Legend of the Tongs because our club represents the true heart of grassroots footy,” he said.
“We’re more than just a team—we’re a tight-knit community built on pride, excellence and teamwork.
“Whether it’s volunteers helping in the canteen or in various game day roles, coaches teaching our junior and youth players the fundamental skills of the game, our loyal supporters who turn up to every home game or the local businesses that sponsor our club to keep costs down for families – everyone plays their part.”
The competition, which is part of Bunnings’ eleventh year in partnership with the AFL, honours the incredible contributions of community volunteers across Australia during the 2025 AFL season.
Bunnings Bundaberg Complex Manager, Kelly Ritchie is proud the store can give back to local clubs, with the support of the AFL.
“Our Legend of the Tongs campaign celebrates the some of the bests part of our local community,” Kelly said.
“Whether it’s at their local club grounds or as part of our weekly sausage sizzles, unsung heroes like Braden tirelessly show up week in and week out to support their players and raise much needed funds for their clubs.
“We feel privileged to be able to gift the Brothers Bulldogs AFL Club Bundaberg with improved equipment to support their volunteers where it matters.”
Nominations for Legend of the Tongs remain open until 24 August 2025.
