Look out for bright pink bucket hats over the coming weeks as licensed venues in the Bundaberg area raise awareness of drink spiking.
Drink spiking is when alcohol or another drug is added to someone’s drink without their knowledge or consent.
Staff and security will be wearing the hats, promoting the question ‘Who’s watching your drink?’
They will also be providing foil drink toppers, which can be placed on top of drinks to protect the contents.
Lloyd Finnis, Chairperson Bundaberg Safe Night Precinct said that while the hats were a fun way to bring attention to the issue, it was a serious message.
“Although drink spiking is not common, the outcome can be devastating”, Mr Finnis said.
“We are hoping that the bright pink hats will be a reminder for patrons to watch over their drinks, and their mate’s.”
“I would encourage anyone who thinks that they, or someone they know is a victim of drink spiking to report it to police, even if they don’t wish to make a formal complaint.”
This project was made possible thanks to generous funding from to Athole Masonic Lodge.
