Deaf and hard of hearing school students will have the chance to meet young adults who know firsthand the challenges of growing up deaf.
Over two days in Bundaberg the group will discuss teamwork, making friends, leadership and how to resolve conflict.
The workshops will take place on 22 and 23 February and is organised by Hear For You, a not-for-profit organisation.
The first day will include all things outdoor, rock climbing, archery and a ropes course.
The second day will work on communication skills and teamwork as participants work through an escape room activity.
Ruby, 16, who attended a previous workshop, said she felt hopeless before she went to the Hear For You workshop but was now hopeful for the future.
“I am way more confident since attending the Hear For You Workshop,” she said.
Living in a regional area like Bundaberg means opportunities to connect with other deaf or hard of hearing young people are rare, making the two day event even more valuable.
Hear For You Queensland Manager Sherri Brereton said teenagers always really enjoy the chance to spend the day with others who understand the world in a similar way that they do.
“It’s really great for them to spend the day with other kids who relate to their experience,” Sherri said
“They can just be themselves.”
The workshops will include social connections, art activities, archery, ropes courses and an escape room, and is a chance for families and parents to connect.
Registrations are open until 17 February.
Tickets can be covered by National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding or paid for by families.
The workshop will take place from 9.30 am to 3 pm Saturday 22 February and 11 am to 1 pm Sunday 23 February at Chaverim Shalom College Outdoor and Environment Centre.
