A new driving school has opened in the Bundaberg Region, offering young drivers the ability learn in a personalised and supported environment.
Start Right Driving School Bundaberg owner Terry Leckie has the details:
What inspired you to launch your new business in Bundaberg?
While volunteering for a local not-for-profit organisation as a driver mentor for two and a half years, I realised my passion for teaching people to drive confidently and safely and the difference getting a licence can make to a person’s life.
I am also in my third year as an occupational therapy student and have a long-term goal of further post-grad education and becoming a qualified driver Occupational Therapist as there is a shortage of driver Occupational Therapists in the Wide Bay region.
That’s what inspired me to start Start Right Driving School Bundaberg, I wanted to create a local driving school that really focuses on setting learners up for success in the real world.
Our goal is to help create safe, confident drivers and contribute to a strong, road-smart community.
Can you provide an overview of the services your business will offer?
I enjoy working with learner drivers who may need extra time and support to feel comfortable behind the wheel.
This includes brand-new drivers, as well as learners with diverse learning needs or neurodivergent drivers who may find driving more challenging.
We take the time to tailor each lesson to suit their needs, ensuring they feel safe, supported and confident.
We also encourage parents to reach out and share any specific needs their child may have so we can adjust our teaching approach to suit them.
We offer automatic driving lessons with flexible lesson times, weekend and night drives, and test preparation.
Focusing on creating a calm, supportive, personalised and structured learning environment to build confidence.
We service the following local areas: Bundaberg, Bargara, Burnett Heads, and Elliott Heads, with lessons also available in Childers and Gin Gin by appointment.
What positive experiences have shaped your journey in establishing this business?
A big part of my inspiration for starting Start Right Driving School Bundaberg came from my time as a volunteer driver mentor.
Through this experience, I met some incredible young people and built strong connections with them.
Seeing their progress and receiving positive feedback reinforced my passion for helping others gain confidence behind the wheel.
How do you envision your business contributing to job creation and the local economy in Bundaberg?
I understand that obtaining a driver’s license can be a major barrier to employment for many job seekers particularly in rural areas like Bundaberg.
That’s why I’m hoping to partner with local organisations to support their clients through government-funded driving lesson programs.
Having a driver’s license can open so many job opportunities, and I’d love to play a small part in helping people gain independence and confidence on the road.
If you’re a local organisation interested in working together, I’d be happy to chat about how we can support learner drivers in our community.
Where are you located and how can the community find out more or contact you?
