Annual orchid show returns to Bundaberg

The Bundaberg Orchid Society is once again holding its annual Orchid Show at the Bundaberg Civic Centre from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 May.
Bundaberg’s annual Orchid Show will feature plants from over 40 classes of orchids.

The Bundaberg Orchid Society is once again holding its annual Orchid Show at the Bundaberg Civic Centre from 9 to 11 May this year.

Here is what they had to say about their upcoming event.

Can you provide an overview of the event?

We are very lucky to have one of the best orchid clubs in Australia, with many experienced members who so readily share their wealth of knowledge about all aspects of growing this queen of plants.

Each year, our show attracts exhibitors from among our local members, as well as sister clubs in Childers, Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Gladstone.

Visitors from all over Australia attend our show, which is renowned as one of the best Orchid Shows in Queensland.

What are the main activities or highlights attendees can look forward to?

Exhibitors work all year, preparing plants for entry into over 40 classes of orchids, with prizes for each class donated by our extremely generous sponsors.

Visitors will be enchanted by the magnificent blooms and healthy plants in each section, then will be blown away by the four champion orchids of the show, which are separately displayed on their own table.

The prizes for champion orchid, reserve champion, best species and best specimen plants are significant monetary amounts which are also donated by our wonderful local business sponsors, a number of whom have been supporting our show for many years.

As it is on Mother’s Day weekend, our talented group of flower-arrangers will be making flower posies that are available for purchase at a very modest price. A perfect gift for every mum.

There is no doubt that even non-gardeners will be inspired to try their hand at orchid growing, and you will be tempted by the many plants available for sale.

Although orchids appear so delicate, they are actually fairly easy to grow and very forgiving plants.

Many more orchids are killed by kindness than neglect.

In fact, orchids are ancient plants and there is fossil record showing that they even co-existed with the dinosaurs – so they must be tough!

Specially selected, reputable commercial growers will be selling quality plants and supplies, as well as club-member plants at very reasonable prices.

And there are experienced growers on hand to advise you how to get the best out of your plants, including growing conditions, watering, feeding and general care.

Are there any local businesses or organisations partnering with you for this event?

To make your visit even more enjoyable, Cruz the Bakehouse will be offering morning tea and light lunches at very reasonable prices and there is a seating area in the Civic Centre, where you can sit and enjoy your refreshments.

We are fortunate to have many loyal sponsors who provide ongoing support to our show and each year we welcome new sponsors and thank them for their generosity.

We encourage members and visitors to support these community-spirited businesses.
