In this week's sports wrap, Vince Habermann looks at Queensland School Sport junior cricket played in Bundaberg and all the weekend action.
The Wide Bay team, which includes seven Bundaberg Region players, Olivia A’Bell, Tiana Cross, Baylie Hutton, Atalia Knight, Ella Reece, Abby Stevens and Anna Svensson, made a mixed start to the Queensland School Sport 10-12 years Girls Cricket Championships in Bundaberg yesterday, defeating Met North in their morning game but being overpowered by Sunshine Coast in the afternoon.
The host region claimed a hard-fought six-run victory over Met North but was beaten by the Sunshine Coast by 38.
Sunshine Coast had been trounced by Met East by 86 runs earlier in the day.
Three teams won both of their day one clashes – Northern Invitational, Metropolitan East, and Capricornia.
All sides play two more Pool fixtures today and one more tomorrow morning, with the semi-finals to follow in the afternoon.
All Pool games and semi-finals are T20 matches, with games at both Salter Oval and Kendall’s Flat each day.

Locally, two more centuries were recorded in the Rum City Foods Intra Cup with opener Gavin Scott carrying his bat for his maiden century in Bundaberg – an unbeaten 109 – to spearhead East Bundy Magpies to a 25 run victory over Norths in a high-scoring affair at Salter Oval.
In Hervey Bay, Brothers stalwart Jarrod Layock smashed a six to bring up victory against the hosts with 13 overs to spare and finish unconquered on 103 in an unbroken partnership of 167 with young gun Matt Jackson (74 not out) after they had been in trouble at 3-22.
Gavin Scott, in his third season with the Magpies (formerly Past High), had a previous best of 87, also against Norths exactly two years earlier, but he struck form with vengeance, firstly combining in an opening partnership of 163 with Lennon Childs (75), then continuing on to finish with 11 fours and two sixes and being the main-stay in an imposing total of 4-249.
Norths staged a valiant run chase but, in the end, finished short at 8-224.
In the ConocoPhillips Central Queensland Cup semi-finals, Bundaberg travelled to Mackay short on numbers in both the men’s and women’s divisions and paid the price, with the Bulls, with a bare six men, beaten by the Meteors 120-63, and the Bears, with seven women, going down to the Meteorettes 83-59.
The Bears led 19-18 at quarter-time but fatigue increasingly became a factor, and they slipped behind 38-31 at half-time, and despite trying hard to the end, they were fighting a losing battle.
Another century was recorded in a different sport on the weekend, with West Barbarians white-washing a much undermanned RB Renegades 104-0 with hat-tricks of tries to Osea Tulele, John Akers and Suliasi Cakautabu, and Andrew Filo racking up a whopping 29 points with one try and 12 conversions.
Turtles Brothers were also very short on man-power in a 64-0 shut-out by Fraser Coast Mariners.
In Hervey Bay Softball, United Firesticks continued their roll, moving to within one point of leaders Terrors, who have played one more game than them, with a 5-3 victory over them at the Bay on Saturday, while Waves Tsunamis dislodged Bargara Bullets from third by beating them 13-11.
In the A Grade Men’s competition, United Heat moved to No. 1 despite enduring a mixed bag in their double-header, accounting for Maryborough 5-3 before being the 10-2 victims in a Terrors’ attack.
Waves Schooners and Misfits are equal-second after slugging out a 3-all draw, while Bargara Bombers remain on the bottom of the ladder despite shooting down Maryborough 7-2.
