Five teams will line up for the first round of the annual Wide Bay Dragon Boat Regatta to be paddled on the Burnett River on Saturday.

The round is hosted by the Bundaberg Dragon Boat Club and will involve a second local club, the Burnett River Dragon Boat Club, and crews from Cooloola, Hervey Bay and 1770.

Racing will begin at 9am over a short course directly below the Anzac Swimming Pool on the town side of the river.

Competitors will set up in Lions Park near the Burnett Traffic Bridge on the northern bank.

Three boats will feature in each of the heat races, with the top four performing boats to contest finals.

The teams are racing for points with return regattas held at each club’s home course over coming months.

Each boat carries about 20 paddlers plus a sweep.

A coffee van, food and drinks will be available during the event.

The race is on between Bundaberg and 1770.
