Bombers defeat Eagles in AFL Wide Bay women’s final

Across the Waves put up a gallant effort in the AFL Wide Bay women's grand final last night but went down by nine points to Hervey Bay in a close contest.

The visitors maintained a slender advantage throughout the night, leading 1.4 to 1.0 at quarter time.

They were seven points up at half time and looked to be in control at the last change, ahead by 12 points.

Hervey Bay Mayor George Seymour drove home with a smile last night after the Bombers won the AFL Wide Bay women's grand final against Across the Waves, while Bundaberg Regional Councillor Helen Blackburn said sport was the winner.

The Eagles kicked the only goal of the final term but couldn't quite peg it back and went down 2.3.15 to 3.6.24.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour was there to support his team while Bundaberg Regional Council's sport and recreation portfolio holder Helen Blackburn was cheering for the Eagles.

Cr Blackburn said sport was the winner.

“It's great how the AFL has encouraged participation by women and girls,” she said.

“The women showed terrific skills and camaraderie and played with spirit and enthusiasm.

“Congratulations to both clubs and AFL Wide Bay.”
