Nine Bundaberg footballers are among an elite squad of 16 in a Wide Bay Select team to take on the Brisbane Roar in an exhibition match at Hervey Bay on 21 September.

The players are:

  • Jarryd Bennier (Brothers Aston Villa)
  • Cory Legett (Across the Waves)
  • Sam Meyer (Across the Waves)
  • Josh Adcock (United Park Eagles)
  • Matt Twyford (Across the Waves)
  • Sam Collinson (Across the Waves)
  • Leun Hewitt (Bingera)
  • Daniel Watson (Bingera)
  • Joel Haack (Bingera)

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour joined with Football Wide Bay’s technical director Dale Paxton at the Hervey Bay RSL today to announce the squad.

Mr Paxton said all of the local footballers asked to be part of the Wide Bay Select team were excited to compete against Queensland’s only Hyundai A-League side.

“We have an amazing array of local talent in the Wide Bay and this will be a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to mix it with some of the best footballers in Australia,” he said.

“Young footballers will also be excited at being able to watch elite players getting put through their paces at training sessions and a game on the very fields that they themselves play on.

“Events like this Brisbane Roar visit are what helps build young players’ connection to the game and highlights a pathway to pursue their footballing dreams.”

Cr Seymour said he was delighted the Brisbane Roar would be visiting the region for a community camp from 18-22 September.

“Get along to the game at the sports precinct on Saturday, 21 September,” he said.

“Book tickets to the Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce’s Brisbane Roar team dinner and watch the open training sessions to see how elite footballers practice and prepare.”

Cr Seymour said it's great that more than 1000 people had already registered to attend the match three weeks out from game day.

“Tickets for the game are free but we are asking those who will be attending to please register to help us gauge numbers,” he said.

“It promises to be a great event and I encourage everyone to get along to support our local footballers and watch the best of the best in action at our fantastic new sports precinct.”
