Young Erin ecstatic to win Botanic Gardens Day prize

Botanic Gardens Day
WINNERS: Rhianna, Mitchell and Erin Steindl at the Botanic Gardens receiving a prize pack.

Armed with new gloves, a variety of seeds, a voucher and more, four-year-old Erin Steindl will be getting her green thumb in the garden after winning a prize pack as part of Botanic Gardens Day.

The Bundaberg girl was one of ten winners who took out a gardening prize in a recent online competition run by Bundaberg Regional Council as part of the annual Botanic Gardens Australia New Zealand (BGANZ) celebration.

Parks and Gardens Portfolio Spokesperson Cr Wayne Honor said during COVID-19 restrictions a special event could not go ahead at the gardens, so staff decided to put together some online activities instead.

“The unique and fun activities were all about our beautiful local gardens and included a quiz for people to enjoy,” he said.

“Participants were asked to answer 10 questions about the gardens by exploring our Discover Bundaberg website.

“There were plenty of submissions and we thank everyone who took part!”

Botanic Gardens quiz
Coordinator of Arboriculture, Botanic Gardens and Horticulture Carl Moller meets with quiz winner Erin with brother Mitchell and mum Rhianna Steindl at the Botanic Gardens.

Erin's mother Rhianna said when Erin had found out she had been a winner in the competition, she was ecstatic.

“We got the phone call and Erin was dancing around the room when I told her,” she laughed.

“Erin is at the age now where she really has an interest in gardening and we have veggies growing in the yard that she likes to tend to.

“It was actually her idea to transform our old sandpit into a garden bed.”

Rhianna said her family had enjoyed taking part in the quiz and had learned even more amazing facts about the Bundaberg's Botanic Gardens.

“The online quiz was such a great way to learn so many interesting things about the gardens, things I had never even considered before,” Rhianna said.

“We often visit the area, it is a fantastic place for families with so much to see and do.”
