Bowls: Success for Burnett Bears in state final

Burnett Bowls Club
The Burnett Bears were runners up in the state pennant final.

BOWLS BURNETT MEN

STATE PENNANT FINAL

What a ride! Congratulations to the Burnett Division 1 Men’s Pennant team who came runners up in the State Pennant Final at the weekend.

Burnett won their section by defeating South Townsville, Mackay Suburban and Roma to qualify for the final.

In the final, Burnett played Club Kawana which many observers felt was going to become a one-sided match in favour of the powerful Kawana side.

However, Burnett had other plans to spoil their party.

With two ends to play Burnett was leading 54-52 and holding shot on both rinks playing their final end.

Kurt Brown from Kawana played a brilliant conversion shot to turn a one down into 3 shots up.

This had Kawana leading 55-54 with Darren McCracken’s rink still playing their last end. Crusty sat Kawana’s shot bowl to sit six inches from the jack which was enough to secure a draw and the possibility of playing an extra end.

Unfortunately, Brett Wilke played a magnificent draw bowl to stop 3 inches from the jack to secure the win for Kawana.

All Burnett players played their hearts out and gave their all just to fall short at the end. Everyone involved can be extremely proud of how they played and be proud to represent Burnett Bowls Club.

Many thanks to our team Manager Jack Stewart as he did a great job.

Also, thanks to Kellie and Des Kemp for all their work prior to and during the trip to ensure everything ran smoothly. The State Pennant Runners Up Flag will be proudly displayed at the club for all to see.
