Woodgate Bowls

Tuesday 07.03.2023:

Ladies Day, social triples with a game of Open Ladies Singles thrown in for good measure, and what a game it was!

I know I’ve gone on about the quality of the Mens Open Singles games but todays Ladies game was right up there with the best!

Robyn Bishop had a very hard fought win over Daphne Brettell in a game that went to 30 ends and the final score was a one point difference!

Robyn dominated the first part of the game with Daphne not scoring a point until the third end.

Then it was like ladder climbing, Robyn taking ones and the occasional two, Daphne doing the same until the twenty seventh end when the score was even at 22 all!

Twenty eighth end Daphne took two, twenty ninth end Robyn took two to make the score twenty four all!

How tense was that last end?

Daphne moved the kitty and had a toucher in the ditch, Robyn placed a bowl closer than the toucher, last bowl of the match from Daphne just fell short to give the game to Robyn!

Congratulations to both players, you treated us to a top class game here at little old Woodgate!

Thanks to Gail Lenz who was the marker and Majo Greiner who stood as Umpire for the game!

Rink Draw Winners:

Rink 12:
Actually a tied score with Team Gloria winning on an ends count back over Team Meredith.
L. Ruth Perry
2. Suzanne Weir
S. Gloria Newby.

What a great afternoon of bowls on our greens!

Wednesday 08.03.2023:

Mens Day.
Hot and humid today but our shades made it more comfortable for our Men.
Rink Draw Winners:
Rink 10
Trevor Christensen
Archie Bishop
Have to say this was a nail biting finish, at 20 ends both teams, Team Archie and Team Robbie were on 20 each!
Last end Team Archie got up by one, great friendly rivalry!

Runners Up:
Rink 14
L. Richard Snelling
2. Wayne Reis
S. Rob Hannah.

Thursday 09.03.2023:
Today we two more games in the Mens Open Singles as well as social bowls.

Mens Open Singles:
Bob Winzar had a win over Rowdy Taylor.
A game of the Titians here, two of our top men bowlers slogging it out against each other.
A slow start by Bobby gave Rowdy the lead which he held right until the 17th end, Bobby held it for 17, 18, 19 and 20 when Rowdy made a comeback to be in the lead 21/18 on the 25th end.
Bobby had the bigger finish to take the game 25/21 after 29 ends!

The second match was between the driving machine Greg Silverthorne and the draw bowler Lyall Brettell.
Great bowls from both competitors with Lyall trailing Silver until the 10th end when the lead changed again.
Lyall was holding 22/20 when a magnificent drive by Silver put paid to that.
Silver then went on to take the match 25/22.
Both matches today were enjoyed by the crowd of supporters who could all take something home from the lesson given on the green.
Thanks to Ron Whitton and Robbo who were the markers for the day, and thanks also to Rob Anderson who stood as our Umpire!

Saturday 11.03.2023:

Jackpot Pairs with two competition games included for good measure:
Open Men Singles:
Getting to the pointy end of the competition now, we have been treated to some amazing bowls over the last few play days.
Gordon Nuttall played Oyster Dowling in a game of the draw masters!
Both players put down some great bowls, but Gordon with the bit between his teeth had an answer to Oyster’s shots.
The score was in no way an indication of the quality of the bowls played, with Gordon having a runaway win over Oyster.
Likewise the Open Mens Pairs between Team Byrnes and Team Hannah.
A great tussle between leads Wayne Reis and Trevor Christensen throughout the game kept the crowd on the edge of their seats.
The skips, Robbie Byrnes and Robbie Hannah also did battle with Robbie Byrnes’s draw bowls out manoeuvring Robbie Hannah’s  drive bowls!
Team Byrnes took a convincing win, again some great shots played by all players.
Congratulations to all competitors and thanks to Phil Mullins who marked the singles match and Rob Anderson who was our Umpire for the day.

Rink Draw Winners:|
Rink 12, social pairs:
Dennis Smith and Phil Nelson
Sunday 12.03.2023:
Social triples and one game of Open Mens Pairs:
Greg Silverthorne played Bob Winzar in another great game.
Bob made a good start with Silver not catching up until the 8th end, from then on it was a slow chip at the scores with ones and the occasional two added to either score.
Bob got stuck on 10 for 6 ends while Silver added his ones and twos to take the lead.
He finished by taking a 3 on the 24th end to take the match.
A great game played in hot and humid conditions.
Congratulations to both players and thanks to Robbo who marked the match and Ian Kirby who was our Umpire for the day.

The final of the Mens Open Final will be played between Greg Silverthorne and Gordon Nuttall, should be something really special, well worth coming down to watch and support the cream of our men bowlers. Unsure when this will be played but will keep you posted!

Rink Draw Winners:
Social triples game rink 12:
L. Tammy a’Beckett
2. Jane Herd- Evans
S. Gordon Nuttall
Runners Up:
Competition game:
Greg Silverthorne
Bob Winzar
Robbo Marker.
