Saturday 1.04.2023: Social pairs…..although there was only one game, triples was the format for the same!

There were two games of mens competition pairs played plus the premier event for the day was the final of the Open Mens Singles:

I did tell you to get off the couch and come down and see something special and I wasn’t telling porkies……it was a cracker of a game!

Thoroughly enjoyed by the biggest crowd we’ve seen in ages, some of us giving up our usual Saturday pairs game to watch every bowl of the match, some on the edge of our seats!

A game of changing fortunes between, to quote Rob Hannah, the “old bull and the young stud”, unsure if either man would lay claim to those titles however it was a lesson in tactics and styles and certainly made for a great afternoon’s entertainment.

The “Old Bull” Gordon Nuttall started slowly, very slowly while the “Young Stud” Greg Silverthorne raced out to commanding lead.

Silver was leading Gordon 17/6 on the fourteenth end!

However never discount a seasoned bowler and Gordon is not one to throw in the towel!

Gordon slowly clawed his way back into the game, some great drives by Silver and draw bowls from both players saw Gordon chip away at the gap and by the twenty first end Silver was ahead 21/19.

From then on it was a game of changing fortunes, 21/20, 22/20, 22/21, on the twenty fifth end Gordon took the lead 23/22, only to relinquish the lead on the next end with the score even on 23/23.

The next two ends were nail biting stuff, some fabulous draw bowls saw Silver again take the lead on the twenty seventh end 24/23!

The twenty eighth end saw Gordon take 2 to make the final score 25/24!

What an amazing game, congratulations to both bowlers you gave us an afternoon to remember and some lessons learned about the game of bowls.

Special thanks to President Wayne Stanley who marked the game and to Rob Anderson our Umpire for the days play.

The Mens Pairs games were both well received with some great shots played:

Winners: Wayne Reis Robbie Byrnes Had a win over: Dennis Dean Rowdy Taylor

Oyster Dowling Brian Cornish Had a win over: Luke Royan Mark Royan

The social triples game took out the Rink Draw Winners: Phil Mullins Greg Madson Marilyn Mullins

Sunday 2.04.2023:

A damp and maybe not miserable but close to it day, BUT we still took to the green with not only social bowls but a game of Open Ladies Singles and a game of mixed pairs!

Hardy folk we bowlers!

The Open Ladies Singles round game was a thriller between Donna Smith and Fiona Dowling who are not only fellow rep bowlers but also good friends!

What a game, we have been treated to two amazing games of bowls this weekend in both the Mens and Ladies singles divisions, not to take it away from the pairs games played but these singles games were both something special.

The lesson from both yesterdays game and todays is clearly…..never give up, never throw in the towel, just keep fighting until the end!

Donna got off to a very slow start, Fiona had the upper hand right from the very first end leading all the way to the twenty first end!

At end eight the score was 10/3 to Fiona, at end thirteen it was 13/10 to Fiona, end nineteen 18/15 to Fiona, you can see a pattern forming here, Donna quietly chipping away with some great draw bowls, Fiona also a great draw bowler wasn’t giving up her lead without a fight!

Twenty first end Donna took the lead 19/18 to be in that position for the first time in the match.

From then on it was a game of changing fortunes with the lead changing hands at almost every end!

19 all on the 22nd end, 20/19 to Fiona on the 23rd, 20/21 to Donna on the 24th, 25th a dead end, 22/21 to Fiona on the 26th, 22/24 to Donna on the  27th. 23/24 to Donna on the 28th end and 23/25 final score on the 29th  end, with Donna taking the match.

A battle royal fought out in the true spirit of the game of bowls!

Thanks to Gail Lenz who was the marker for the match and Archie Bishop who stood as Umpire for todays play.

Mixed pairs was also a cracker of a game between Veteran Maurie Strano and his playing partner Lorelle Mattson and Lyall and Daphne Brettell.

Again one side ran out to a good lead, Maurie and Lorelle had their heads in front and Lyall and Daphne had a hard job af playing catch up and claw their way up they did.

Maurie and Lorelle took the game 18/15 in a very exciting finish to great game played in difficult conditions.

Congratulations to all players competing today, you gave us an afternoon to remember.

Rink draw winners:

Rink 10: Competition Ladies Singles  Donna Smith and Gail Lenz (marker)

Encouragement: Rink 11: Competition Mixed Pairs: Lyall and Daphne Brettell.
