Three local bowlers represent Queensland at the Australian Lawn Bowls Championships
2023 Senior Sides Championships
Adele Pershouse from Bargara Bowls Club and Keith Whalley from Burnett Bowls Club represented Queensland at the Australian Senior Sides Championships (over 60 years of age) recently which were held in Perth, Western Australia from 8 – 11 October.
The competition was held at Joondalup Bowling Club and was a round-robin competition where participants had to play each state/territory once with two match points awarded for a win, 1 match point awarded for a draw and 0 points for a loss.
The state/territory with the most match points at the completion of the rounds was declared the Australian Champion.
Adele was a member of the women’s team which had mixed results over the four days of competition as the Queensland team won their matches against ACT, WA, TAS and the NT.
However, they lost matches to the powerful VIC and NSW teams and had a very close loss to SA losing 52 – 55. With four wins and thre losses, this had them in 5th place at the end of the Championships.
The Queensland men’s team was more successful as they went through the championships undefeated and returned with the Championship Shield and a Gold Medal for each player.
However, Queensland did not have it all their own way as they had a draw with WA after being well down halfway through their match.
When playing TAS the wind was gusting to about 30 knots making it extremely difficult to draw bowls close to the jack.
QLD were 10 shots behind with six ends to play and scored 13 unanswered shots on the next five ends to lead by three with one end to play.
QLD lost one shot on the final end to win 58 – 56.
A great team effort to overcome some difficult conditions and a determined opposition.
2023 Para Lawn Bowls Australian Championships
Annette Goldsworthy from Burnett Bowls Club recently travelled to Perth, WA as part of the Queensland Para team to contest the National Titles at Warwick Bowling Club from 6 – 9 October.
Annette played in the Open Pairs competition which was split into two sections of four teams with the winner of each section playing off for the Gold Medal.
Annette and her partner won their first match 19 – 14 and their second match 18 – 7.
Only needing to win their final match to make the playoffs, they lost a heart breaker 10 shots to 11.
However, Annette did not come home empty handed as the Queensland Para team was declared the ‘Best Performed’ State/Territory over the Championships with each player in the team receiving a medal.
Well done, Annette.
Congratulations to Adele, Keith and Annette for being selected in their respective Queensland teams to represent their state at the recent Australian Championships held in Perth.

Wednesday: ‘Scroungers’ Singles – this is a fun game of Singles similar to consistency singles where points are allocated to the 4 closest bowls to the jack. Games are played over 12 ends with no driving allowed. Names in by 6.15 pm with games starting at 6.30 pm. Green fees are $10 with 50 percent of the green fees being returned as prize money. All ability levels are welcome so come along for a fun night out.
Thursday: ‘Social Thursday’ Open Pairs (Men’s, Ladies, Mixed). Names in by 2.15 pm as games will commence at 2.30 pm. Play till 4.30 pm with two random lucky draws as prizes.

The Goose Club raffle will be drawn on Friday night at 7 pm. The Member’s Draw was not won last week and will now be $150, so come along, have a meal and a few drinks with the chance to win some great cash and prizes. Live entertainment for this Friday night will be by The Other Bloke and the following Friday, live music will be delivered by Todd Keightley. Members, guests, and visitors are always welcome.
