Airport hotel gets incentive to build

The construction of Bundaberg’s first major hotel in over 20 years has been given a financial incentive through Bundaberg Regional Council’s Projects of Regional Significance program.

Development approval was awarded earlier this year for the Material Change of Use application for Residential Multi Unit (Motel) over land at 45 Airport Drive, Kensington.

The three storey MVP Airport Hotel would be a 77 key facility and feature a pool, restaurant, bar, conference room and gym.

The successful Projects of Regional Significance application to have the development’s infrastructure charges reduced by 100% has given the developer a $654,292.46 incentive to deliver the new facility, on the condition construction is complete within two years.

Planning Committee Chair Mayor Helen Blackburn said this development was a terrific example of the importance of Council’s Projects of Regional Significance program.

“This project is valued at an estimated $24.8 million and would provide a number of economic benefits to our region throughout construction and operation,” Mayor Blackburn said.

“We already know there is significant demand for more accommodation within the region to support our thriving tourism industry, that’s why Council is working hard to attract this major project.

“Seeing this hotel built by 31 May 2026 would have a flow on effect throughout our economy because more visitors mean greater need for a range of services from retail to hospitality and that increase in demand means more local jobs and opportunities for small businesses to grow.”

Council’s Projects of Regional Significance scheme offers discounts of up to 100% off infrastructure projects for developments which have a value in excess of $15 million, will provide more than 50 additional direct jobs or that Council considers would have a special community or environmental benefit.

Other projects which have recently been supported under the program include Gina’s Table and Okara.

Mayor Blackburn said the proposed hotel was well-situated close to the airport.

“If constructed this motel would be the first 4 star and above accommodation of this capacity to be developed in Bundaberg in over two decades.

“In addition to acting as a driver for economic growth and new jobs, the MVP Airport Hotel would be just the second of its kind in Bundaberg.”

The reduction in infrastructure charges was endorsed in the 28 May Ordinary Meeting of Council.

  1. Excellent! I am so pleased there is finally going to be at least a 4 star hotel in Bundaberg and near the airport which is another… excellent! Hope I am still alive to visit it with International travellers. Keep Bundaberg growing, that’s what we need. I hope others will agree but naturally there will be the downers, lol.

  2. Great job…. And hats off to the council for promoting such investments…. It’s so pleasing to see our Bundy grow in services and infrastructure…. Let’s bring it on…😊

  3. I am wondering why in the editorial it states it will be a hotel albeit on the photo it states it will be a motel. What is it going to be?

  4. Now all we need is an airport that allows plane’s to to go to other destinations than Brisbane

  5. So what happened to the much larger hotel proposed by Brothers Sports Club? What happened to Jewel? What happened to Bargara Golf Club hotel?

There’s 4 star accomidation in Bundaberg already near by. A better spot for a hotel would be on the GoodWood road entrance into town as no motel is there currently & there’s a significant amount of unused land on that entrance.

  6. The whole town needs more/better accomodation. All the publicity especially Queensland’s going to get with this new tv advertising, where are the International people going to be accommodated? Why is it that no major hotel chains are built here? Guess no answer will be given to this as from what I have already read people have asked questions and none replied to.
If the new swim pool is going to have 2032 Olympic training there, someone please tell me where are they going to stay.
