Get ready to dive in as Be Active Be Alive hits the starting blocks in pools across the region.

Bundaberg Regional Council’s free fitness program has seen a range of indoor and outdoor classes on offer with water-based classes now also available.

Running from Monday 11 November and until Sunday 15 December, aqua-exercise sessions will be held at Norville Park Pool and Kepnock State High School Pool in Bundaberg, Isis War Memorial Pool in Childers and Gin Gin Swimming Pool.

Community Liveability, Sport and Recreation portfolio spokesperson Councillor Carmen McEneany said she encouraged community members to make the most of the variety of classes still on offer.

“The Be Active Be Alive program has been well supported this year with some new exercises to try as well as some old favourites,” Cr McEneany said.

“As the weather continues to warm up, we are excited to now also offer free pool classes in Bundaberg, Childers and Gin Gin.

“While standard pool entry fees apply, all classes are free to attend with no registrations required.

“We encourage everyone to give it a go and make the most of this round of the program before it wraps up towards the end of the year.”

Dive into the pools program

Kate Munro of Roar Kombat Fitness has been part of the Be Active Be Alive program before and said she was looking forward to running water aerobics classes at Isis War Memorial Pool.

“There is so much research around the benefits of water exercise,” Kate said.

“It is suited to such a vast population of individuals with different exercise goals, whether to increase cardiorespiratory fitness or those that find land exercise too much impact.

“Water offers benefits of hydrostatic pressure and natural resistance which makes it so effective.”

Kate said those attending her classes could expect low impact, energetic and fun fitness sessions with some good tunes.

“I see so much benefit in this type of fitness,” she said.

“It gives individuals an opportunity to try water exercise out for themselves and see just how much they can reap the benefits.”

Kate said she thought programs like Be Active Be Alive were an important way to give community members access to exercise opportunities.

“We are so blessed to have such a great council facility with the upgrade of the pool to undercover a few years ago,” Kate said.

“Many individuals have limited access or cost barriers to sports and recreational activities which are so important for health both physically and mentally.

“I understand for some exercise isn’t a priority as much as it should be, not through unwillingness but also cost, so it’s advantageous for our community.”
