Recycle right this festive season

recycle festive season
With boxes and wrapping paper aplenty, Christmas is a great time to recycle and reuse rubbish!

With the festive season here, Bundaberg Regional Council is encouraging residents to continue good recycling practices to help reduce waste and protect the environment.

Waste and Recycling Portfolio spokesperson Cr Gary Kirk is urging the community to make sustainable choices during the holidays.

“Christmas often leads to an increase in waste, but by following simple recycling guidelines, we can all do our part to minimise landfill and create a cleaner region,” Cr Kirk said.

Recycling tips for the holidays:

  • Keep it loose: Place recyclables loose in your yellow-lidded bin—do not use plastic bags.
  • Rinse items: Clean your bottles, jars, and cans for better recycling outcomes.
  • Cardboard boxes: Flatten boxes to save space and ensure they fit in the bin.
  • Remove lids: Take lids off containers and bottles before recycling.
  • Know what to avoid: Items like soft plastics, broken toys, and glassware cannot go in the recycling bin but can often be recycled elsewhere.

“We also encourage residents to download the Recycle Mate app, which provides guidance on recycling specific items based on location,” Cr Kirk added.

“It’s an easy way to ensure you’re recycling correctly, even when you’re unsure.”

Council also reminds residents to explore other sustainable practices during the season, such as composting food waste, reusing wrapping paper, and donating unwanted gifts.

Bin collection and waste facility open times

On December 25, all waste facilities will be closed except the Bundaberg Waste Management Facility on University Drive, which will operate from 7 am to 1 pm.

Residents are reminded to separate their loads before visiting waste facilities to ensure an efficient and smooth process.

Kerbside collection services will start earlier than normal on public holidays, with collection times varying between Christmas and New Year.

To avoid missed collections, residents should place their bins out the night before their usual collection day.

Council thanks residents for their efforts in recycling and waste management throughout the year and wishes everyone a safe and Merry Christmas!
