Celebrate Year of the Snake at Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year celebrations in 2024, where students from Bundaberg’s sister city in China, Nanning, did a calligraphy demonstration.

The Bundaberg Multiplex will come alive with colour, culture, and celebration for this year’s Lunar New Year event, happening from 2 pm to 5 pm on Saturday 8 February.

Hosted by Bundaberg Regional Council, the free, family-friendly event will mark the Year of the Snake with an afternoon filled with engaging activities, performances, and workshops.

Council’s Events portfolio spokesperson Cr Steve Cooper said the Lunar New Year celebration was a cherished annual tradition that brought the community together.

“The Year of the Snake symbolises wisdom and transformation, and we’re thrilled to honour this rich cultural heritage with a vibrant line-up of activities for everyone to enjoy,” Cr Cooper said.

“Attendees can immerse themselves in the artistry of a Chinese tea ceremony and try their hand at traditional calligraphy or Tai Chi.

Entertainment will include the spectacular PCYC dragon dancers and Taiko drumming performance by Bundaberg State High School, providing a taste of traditional movement and storytelling.

Foodies can delight in a range of Asian-inspired food stalls, showcasing authentic flavours that celebrate the culinary diversity of the east.

Cr Cooper encouraged residents to embrace the celebration as a way to connect with the region’s multicultural community and Bundaberg Region’s sister city, Nanning.

“Lunar New Year is all about unity, learning, and celebration, and we’re proud to once again be joined by a delegation of primary school students from Nanning, our sister city, performing at this year’s event.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the whole family to experience the history and culture of Lunar New Year while enjoying a fun-filled day out.”

Don’t miss this chance to step into the world of Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Snake in style.
