Work will soon begin on a major upgrade to the Hughes Road/Blain Street intersection, delivering significant safety and connectivity benefits for the growing Bargara community.
The Bundaberg Regional Council project will include the construction of a new roundabout to support increased traffic flow and provide safer crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.
The full road closure for the upgrade will begin on 10 February 2025, with detours in place.
Despite the closure, all businesses on Hughes Road will remain open and accessible via the southern end, at the Wessels/Watsons Road intersection.
Bargara Uniting Church can be accessed from the eastern side of Blain Street.
Roads and Infrastructure (urban) portfolio spokesperson Cr Larine Statham-Blair said the upgrade was part of Council’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure to growing communities.
“This project is a long-term investment in the safety and liveability of the Bargara area,” she said.
“With ongoing development along Hughes Road and a planned extension to Blain Street, this upgrade will ensure the intersection can handle increased traffic while providing safer conditions for all road users.”
The new roundabout will feature designated crossings to encourage active transport options and connect new developments to Bargara.
“Traffic will be improved, and the area will become safer and more accessible for cyclists and pedestrians, encouraging healthier, more sustainable ways to travel,” Cr Statham-Blair said.

Award-winning planning
The Hughes Road/Blain Street intersection upgrade was identified as part of the Bargara Emerging Communities Infrastructure Planning (ECIP) project, which has received national recognition.
In 2023, the project won the Institute of Public Works Australasia (QNT) Innovation and Sustainability in Water Award and the Stormwater Queensland Excellence in Strategic or Master Planning Award.
The roundabout works are being delivered as part of the Bundaberg Regional Council’s 2024/2025 budget.

New roundabouts for safety and still no one cares about suburban streets that are not sealed from side to side with cars and motorbikes speeding from one stop sign to another to see who can go the fastest. Get you children off the road or be run down.
As a tradesman who drives the roads of Bundaberg everyday, I see no problem with that intersection, it’s one I use regularly servicing clients in the Bargara area. Can we please take a closer look at Bargara road and Ashfield/zielke Ave, parents transporting children running the gauntlet every morning and afternoon just to try and break into the traffic you can wait 5 10 min waiting for a safe entry if one ever appears.
This project is all well and good,
What are the main road authorities going to do about the Hughes rd /Bargara rd intersection?
This intersection definitely needs attention.
The Blain St Hughes road intersection upgrade is a good idea. It probably would not happen without the new estate being developed nearby. The problem is that a bigger traffic problem has not been addressed. Hughes road and Bargara road intersection requires upgrading. If this is done it would reduce the amount of traffic that use Blain St to go to the shopping centre.
I hope everyone has read the Bundaberg Integrated Transport Strategy and is ready for the ‘Active Transport Options’ which is a euphemism for ‘Get on your e-scooter, everyone’ because there is no plan for any enhanced public transport options for coastal areas. E-scooters are an explicit transport alternative in this plan even though it acknowledges public concerns over their broader use.
What about bargara road where it is actually needed.
all the houses shouldve been stopped theyre not needed and will cause more congestion then frustration levels cause more smashes, the council is adamant on overpopulating the area with more traffic and southerners
